Minneapolis -- Minneapolis-based body-care company Aveda and airport concessionaire French Meadow Bakery and Café have been recognized in PETA's sixth annual Proggy Awards for creating high-quality cruelty-free products--the former for your skin and hair, the latter for your taste buds. The companies will each receive a framed certificate and will be featured on PETA's award-winning Web site PETA.org. PETA's Proggy Awards (Proggy is for "progress") recognize animal-friendly achievement in commerce and culture.

ˇ  Best Cruelty-Free Spa Treatments: Aveda
Unlike companies such as Unilever, which still poison and kill animals to test their products, Aveda uses modern technology, proven ingredients, and human tests. Winner of a 2005 Proggy for its animal-friendly shampoos, conditioners, and cleansers, Aveda is now taking top honors for its widely available facials, body scrubs, and other spa treatments.

ˇ  Best Airport Concession: French Meadow Bakery and Café
The French Meadow shops at New York's JFK, Boston's Logan, and the Twin Cities' MSP international airports make long layovers a pure pleasure. And because many of French Meadow's goodies are free of cruelly obtained milk and eggs, flying the friendly skies just got a little animal-friendlier.

"Aveda and French Meadow Bakery allow you to indulge to your heart's content while treating animals with the respect they deserve," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "These companies have helped push fine cruelty-free products into the mainstream, and we're delighted to recognize their efforts."

This year, Proggy Awards have gone to producers and marketers of vegan foods, leather-free shoes, and cruelty-free personal-care products; an animal-friendly production studio; and a member of Congress.
