New York -- More than 100 people dressed as zombies drenched in "blood" and holding signs that read, "I'd Rather Be Dead Than Eat at KFC!" will lead a protest outside a Manhattan KFC restaurant on Saturday. The demonstration--courtesy of peta2, the youth division of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)--will follow the national conference that peta2 is holding in the city. The group is angry about KFC suppliers' abusive treatment of chickens on factory farms and in slaughterhouses.
Date: Saturday, October 11
Time: 6 p.m.
Place: KFC at Herald Square, 1286 Broadway (at W. 33rd Street), New York City
Why are peta2's zombies dead set against KFC? The roughly one billion chickens who are killed each year for KFC are tortured in ways that would result in cruelty-to-animals charges if the victims were other animals. They are drugged and bred to grow so large that many become crippled from the weight of their massive upper bodies. Their throats are cut while they are still conscious, and millions are scalded to death in defeathering tanks.
"Even flesh-eating zombies have nothing on the Colonel's cruelty," says PETA's Dan Shannon. "We're urging consumers not to set foot inside a KFC restaurant until the company stops these abuses."
