Wickenburg, Ariz. -- Hardly a week goes by without a celebrity checking into a rehab center. And with the growing demand for healthy "green" foods like organic vegetables and mock meats, high-end treatment facilities across the country are adding vegetarian and vegan options to their menus. So PETA--which has ranked the nation's most vegetarian-friendly hotels, ballparks, prisons, and even fast-food chains--decided to take a peek inside some of the country's most exclusive alcohol and drug rehab facilities. Wickenburg's The Meadows has ranked number five on PETA's list of the top five vegetarian-friendly rehab centers.
The Meadows' menu offers veggie burgers, vegetarian casseroles, and a variety of organic vegetables. The facility will receive a framed certificate of appreciation from PETA and a congratulatory letter.
Grabbing first place is the Caron Foundation, located in Wernersville, Pa. This body- and soul-mending facility serves up a variety of vegetarian dishes, including several hearty and light vegetarian soups, as well as entrées such as spinach-mushroom pie, tofu tetrazzini, meatless paella, and eggplant, pepper, and tomato ratatouille--among other specialties. Celebrity guests have included Liza Minnelli, Steven Tyler, and Miss USA Tara Conner. Taking the number two spot is Tucson's Cottonwood de Tucson. This desert getaway wows clients with its baked rigatoni with spinach, wasabi mashed potatoes with snap peas, portobello mushrooms stuffed with polenta, and other vegetarian foods. Former residents include Ron Wood, Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell, and Robbie Williams. Rounding out the list are Hazelden in Center City, Minn., and Passages in Malibu, Calif.
"When you're already beaten down by drugs or alcohol, you'll feel so much better if you shed your meat and cheese addiction," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "A healthy, humane vegetarian diet can heal the body, mind, and soul."
