Seattle --
Since the first week of April, pigeons whose heads have been impaled with metal darts have been spotted around Seattle. The darts apparently were fired from a blow gun. Despite their serious injuries, the birds remain alive and mobile with blow darts through their heads. The lodged projectiles leave the animals at risk of painful, life-threatening infections and further injury if the darts get caught on objects. As pigeons often gather closely together, other birds can be blinded by the protruding points. Local authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the attacks. That is why PETA is offering as much as $2,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for these violent crimes.
"Animal abusers are cowards," says PETA Manager Martin Mersereau. "They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them. Seattle residents have reason to be concerned. According to leading mental health professionals and law enforcement agencies, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat to all animals--including humans."
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Seattle Animal Shelter at 206-386-PETS.
