Vegan Holiday Faux Turkeys

No holiday meal would be complete without a veggie turkey. Try these tasty turkey-friendly alternatives this holiday season for a meal that everyone can celebrate:

Not sure how to prepare the faux turkey? Our chefs put together a few tips for dressing the already-tasty veggie turkeys:

Always follow the package directions for cooking.
For wheat- and soy-based veggie turkeys, try basting them in vegetable broth while they’re cooking.
Spice up your roast by coating it in a rub. First, cover the veggie turkey in melted margarine. Then sprinkle it with Cajun seasoning and cook it according to the package directions.
For a traditional take on faux turkey, coat the roast in olive oil or melted margarine and then spread on poultry-seasoning herbs before cooking.
Deep-frying a veggie turkey is a good way to make sure that it’s moist and flavorful. Try our Deep-Fried Tofurky recipe.
Try basting the roast with your favorite store-brought glaze during the last 30 to 45 minutes of cooking time.

Trader Joe's has a "Turkey-Less Stuffed Roast with gravy" that they just came out with. It is Vegan and delicious. I had it last week and plan to take one to my sister's for Thanksgiving for my omnivore family to try. I also plan to purchase 2 or 3 additional ones in December since it is planned as a seasonal item but can be frozen for use later.

I've been practicing making my own seitan, and while it's a bit of hard work it is definitely worth the effort. It can be a bit chewy, though, so I was thinking of adding some whole grain flour to the vital wheat gluten just to see if the texture improves. (It's hard for me to get to Whole Foods, though I do have a Field Roast loaf in the freezer just to be on the safe side.)

Anthony, I eat "fake" meat as an easy alternative for protein. I don't eat it all the time, just when I'm pressed for time and need something quick and don't have the ingredients or time to make a more healthy meal. I would prefer to eat the more healthy legumes, whole grains, etc... but time and money don't always allow.
