When I was preparing to graduate from the University of Oregon (go Ducks!), I made a list of all the places I wanted to work. They were all ".orgs," and PETA was at the top of the list. I didn't really know anything about animal rights, but I was vegan, and PETA's mission statement struck me to the core. I've always been driven by an unrelenting sense of fairness (I'm sure it was a wonderful trait when I was 3!), and it seemed to me that the concept of "might makes right" was as wrong when applied by humans to other humans as it was when applied by humans to nonhuman animals. After thinking it through a bit, I realized that my faith and this new concept of "animal rights" were a natural fit.

I have an extraordinarily patient husband, who became particularly stellar during my pregnancy. (Note: Read the books before you get pregnant—there are side effects no one tells you about!) We are parents to one son-to-be (due July 30), two big mutt dogs, and two cats and live in Norfolk, Virginia, though my heart will always be in the Northwest, where I grew up.

Things I dig: rain; sleep; cuddling with my dogs, cats, and hubby (read what you will into the order); reading (I have loads of smarty-pants social justice-y books, but in reality, I tend to reach for a novel first); spending my time wisely; lists; large bodies of water; a rockin’ worship service; and carrot cake.

Things I don’t dig: parking lots; clutter; humidity; injustice; people who don’t use their turn signals (my great-grandpa invented them!); TV commercials; and apathy.
