About Hannah
I was raised on a half-acre with a stream running through it in glacier-raked Northern New Jersey, and I always knew that moving water was vital to my existence. I would spend hours stalking its banks, staring into the algae-covered rocks for signs of crawfish, quietly observing muskrats gliding through the water, and learning about duck society according to mallards and Indian runner ducks.
My husband and I fortuitously bought waterfront property on a tidal river before the real estate boom in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and we now live on 1/3 acre of suburban bliss. Growing up, the visit of a great blue heron was a breathtaking occasion, a yearly coming that we awaited with mystical reverence. Now we observe the comings and goings of these prehistoric-looking birds daily, along with great egrets, night herons, kingfishers, mallards, Canada geese, hooded mergansers, coots, greylag geese, green herons, and all manner of songbirds and gulls. Our canoe brings us into contact with deer, muskrats, river otters, blue crabs, fiddler crabs, and red-winged blackbirds.
As homeowners for going on six years, we try to maintain our house and property in an environmentally friendly way, so we don't harm all the beings we live amongst. We plant vegetables when we can, use a rain barrel, eschew herbicides and pesticides, and are seeking ways to live more sustainably (but I'm not giving up my toilet paper yet!). I invite you to join me on my journey to balance the conveniences of suburban living with Earth- and animal-friendly practices.
