Matchup of the Week: Milk

The following article was written by Keegan Baur.

Milk goes well with just about anything, right? Cookies, pizza, mac ‘n’ “cheese,” cereal, oatmeal, pancakes—each one of these dishes can be rounded out with a tall, cool glass of milk next to it. You might already know that almond milk is one of my favorite beverages, but how does it compare to cow’s milk? Take a look:

Almond Breeze Original Milk

  • Calories: 60
  • Total Fat: 2.5 g
  • Saturated Fat: 0 g
  • Total Carbohydrate: 8 g
  • Protein: 1 g
  • Cholesterol: 0 mg

Dean’s 1% Low-Fat Milk

  • Calories: 110
  • Total Fat: 2.5 g
  • Saturated Fat: 1.5 g
  • Total Carbohydrate: 13 g
  • Protein: 8 g
  • Cholesterol: 10 mg

I tried to give “real” milk the benefit of the doubt by using 1 percent low-fat milk for this comparison. Yet the calories of Dean’s milk are still almost double the calories of the Almond Breeze. And although the total fat content is the same, Dean’s milk has 1.5 grams of saturated fat, compared to the almond milk’s 0 grams.

As always, choosing a cruelty-free milk alternative will be better for both animals and your own health. What could be cooler than that? When you’re looking to fill your glass with milk, do yourself a favor and reach for a delicious milk alternative.

To Jeremia and Ricardo M, sure almond “milk” may have only 1 gram of protein, but I think this “disappointment” goes against the purpose of this wonderful article. You probably learned about the inhumane conditions of the meat industry and how the udders of cows become swollen and infected, right? Not to mention what happens to their children who can’t even drink the milk of their mothers because human beings have decided to drink it instead. I wouldn’t purchase another woman’s breast milk to drink (but there might exist people who devire some sort of pleasure from such a fetish), but hey that’s just me. I am NOT trying to judge you two as individuals although someone can call me out on that for the way I tried to explain this and that’s fine. I just think that the authour of the article wanted to point out ONE of the many varities of alternative “milks” available out there. I recommend everyone try Almond Breeze though it is pretty good, in my opinion.

  • tapan says:

Indians have always been drinking cow’s milk and it was not so cruel as the calf was allowed to drink sufficient milk as it was later required for tilling the fields.
Due to western influence and so called white revolution Indians also now have adopted similar cruel methods to extract milk. Calf is allowed to die out of starvation which is also against the hindu religion. They inject declofenac into the udders which is painful to the animal and due to the irritation it is forced to produce more milk. It is really pathetic.

  • Jeremia says:

You forgot to mention that you ”almond” milk has 7 grams less of Protein……. Rather disappointing don’t you think?
