Where to Find Vegan Groceries

You can now find soy milk, tofu, veggie burgers, and mock meats in pretty much every supermarket nationwide, including Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway, Albertsons, and Target. If you don’t see a certain product at your local grocery store, just ask for it—store managers want suggestions from their customers, and they can usually special order products for you. Local health-food stores, along with health-food chains like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, often have even wider vegan selections.

Of course, a large percentage of the foods that you already eat are vegan, including many cookies, chips, breads, crackers, pastries, cereals, soups, and candies, along with staples like pasta, oatmeal, beans, nuts, rice, fruit, peanut butter, and, last but not least, vegetables.

    I recently became vegetarian and am moving towards being vegan. I have done a lot of research and reading and go to the websites of some brands that I have found to see which stores I can find them in locally. I have found here in Yakima, WA that to get a full variety of various vegan and vegetarian products as well as cruelty free cosmetics and the like that I have a few choice stores. My list here is Fred Myers, Rosauers, TOP Foods, and there is a health food store here as well. There are some products from a certain brand at the various places. If you take the time to do a little homework it does make it easier to go out and get the things you need. 🙂 I have to say too that if I had know eating this way tasted this good I would have done it long ago. I don’t even miss the meat or the dairy.

    Iam saddened by the treatment of animals used for food. I will try the Vegan way. I understand there is a learning curve in shopping methods and places.

    In regards to Soy allergies- I’ve been vegan-ish most of my life (with lifelong lactose intolerance) and after a nasty stomach infection have developed a Soy intolerance. It’s hard to find soy free vegan foods in regular supermarkets but Whole Foods is a really great resource for a surprising large variety of soy free veggie foods. I miss soy and think it tends to make the best dairy substitute so you kind of have to try a bunch of stuff out. I’m not so fond of rice substitutes I’ve ahd but coconut milk ice cream is great.Almond milk also.

    Lastly, I’m a HUGE fan of Amy’s brand foods. They’re all vegetarian and organic but you have to check the labels (they are marked very clearly) for which foods are vegan. While you can find a lot of Amy’s products pretty much everywhere (major victory in the last decade!) a health food store (like Whole Food or even a locally owned store) has some really great varieties of soy-free foods! It’s a really awesome company that is always expanding their product lines and sells so many foods for people with food allergies and intolerances. So that’s my biggest recommendation because the whole brand is wonderful!

    @Amy, I agree with you. Many people worry more about someone who is Vegan or a Vegetarian, saying they are unhealthy and not getting what their body needs. I am a huge fan of Emily Deschanel, who is a strict Vegan. She is not unhealthy to say the least. I also have a friend who gave up meat at the age of three to be like her older sisters. She hardly ever gets sick and is just fine. No one knows what they put into the meat that the FDA does not know about and it is harming us. They should step back, and see how healthy their food is compaired what we eat.

    Try the Silk Almond Milk, it is great!! I really enjoy Silk brands the best, I haven’t found anything I don’t like form them. The Almond Milk tastes great, not a huge difference from regular tasting milk in my opinion. There are always coupons for it as well.
    @ Rhi I do agree with you about not putting things into your body that is not good for you. I would like to state that none of us know what type of hormones they inject all of the animals with that they are raising for mass production. I strongly believe that the chemicals taht are injected into our animals, have created many diseases. If you do research of humanes that are strict Vegans, they have a greater life span then most americans. There are places deemed as Centenarians, there are doctors in regions still performing heart surgeries into their 90’s. There is much research that backs Vegans and Vegetarians, and I feel that most meat eaters are uneducated about what they are consuming and more worried about Vegans and Vegetarians then their ownselves.

    That may be true about those foods being vegan but it doesn’t mean they are good for you as far as what’s in them. General rule of thumb: if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, it’s probably not good for you and you shouldn’t eat it.

    There are other alternatives they have rice milk,almond milk,and coconut milk. Try these they should be in you local superstores listed above our health chain stores.
