What’s in a Vegan’s Freezer?

The following article was written by Keegan Baur.

A vegan friend of mine recently recounted a story to me: Before a date, she’d invited her new beau into her apartment for the first time, and he immediately went straight to her fridge and freezer to see what was inside! Ah, the age-old question posed by meat-eaters to vegans: What do vegans eat? Those of us who don’t eat meat know that going vegan often opens up a world of possibilities and makes us more adventurous in the kitchen. And, of course, there are always mouthwatering faux meats, like delicious Gardein products. Take a gander at these vegans’ freezers:

After hearing my friend’s story, I examined the contents of my own freezer and realized that Gardein is a very important staple in the “frozen foods section,” chez moi. My two favorite products are the Ultimate Beefless Burger and the Chick’n Scallopini. I enjoy eating one of the burgers for lunch at the office and having the “chicken” for dinner with pasta and either homemade marinara sauce or pesto. Both of these options are so delicious that they make me feel like I’m eating food prepared in a restaurant—yet they take mere minutes to cook and serve!

Have you tried Gardein products before? If you live in the U.S. or Canada, use Gardein’s handy-dandy store locator to find out where to buy them. And if you “like” Gardein on Facebook and follow the company on Twitter, you’ll have access to exclusive coupons, irresistible recipes, and more.

Are Gardein products a staple of your vegan freezer? Tell us which product is your favorite and how you like to serve it!

Gardein products are processed with the chemical Hexane.
Check this site to see which company’s were rated.

Don’t get me wrong, faux meats are better than real, but they are still heavily processed and that fact alone means it can not be that great for you. I suggest keeping local, organic, and real whole food as much as possible. And for those days you just want something quick, then get just a little of this stuff…moderation is key.

  • Nicole lee says:

I recently bought a Gardein product, i was to scared to eat it because i have been a vegetarian for three years. So i did some research and ate a really delicious healthy meal! I love Gardein!! I’m so happy my life is complete!

  • Bonny says:

For the people who live in Roseville and Sacramento (I’m from Sacramento too) You can find Gardein at Target!

  • Tara says:

Yum! I just had some of the BBQ pulled shreds on a bun last night. Some of my favorite things about Gardein: Lots of protein, non GMO ingredients, no preservatives, and they’re delicious!

  • Kristen says:

Amelia, I’m in Roseville and I can find Gardein at Whole Foods and Safeway. I was also just told the other day that they’re starting to carry it at Costco. Good luck!

  • Amelia says:

Which stores carry Gardein? I have never seen this brand before? I am in Sacramento.

  • Ella says:

If only this amount of vegan food was available in the U.K! :(

  • Alex says:

Hi! I’m from Argentina too, like Julia, and is not easy to find products like that (almost imposible). I found a little place en Bs As, near a stop of the subte (el que va a Los Incas, no soy de Bs As =P) and there I found cool stuff. It would be good to have a peta website in spanish with recipes. I’d love to help :)

Going vegan is so difficult. I have been a lacto vegetarian since the age of 12, so that’s about 9 years. Rice milk and soy milk are okay. I recently discovered almond milk and hemp milk, but I have not tried them. Sometimes you just cannot avoid dairy. The one thing I cannot stand is gelatin. Amy’s no cheese veggie pizza is the best. Amy’s has the best food. Those Quron nuggets are pretty good, as well.

  • Ashley-P says:

Lisa: All of Gardein’s products are vegan. You can check their website for a list of ingredients.

  • Elsie says:

We discovered this a couple weeks ago and were so excited to try their Mandarin Orange Crispy Chicken! We’re vegan and very happy to see these tasty non-meat options available now. We found ours in Whole Foods. Made it twice already. First time it was good but the “meat” was tender. Next time we made it we fried it for longer and the “meat” became more crispy. It was perfect!!

  • Christhel says:

Hi! So I recently decided to become vegan for various reasons and I was wondering if there are restaurants that offer a vegan menu, any suggestions?.. I’m from NY

  • Julia says:

Those products looks really good! But I live in Argentina, here there´s no Gardein products :( So, I think that a generic article about vegan´s freezer would be really interesting, btw: love all your recipes and translate them, sorry for my english :)

  • Ruth says:

Susie, Trader Joe’s – at least my local one – has a list for vegetarian and one for vegan foods that they sell.

  • loraproctor/vegan says:

These “Gardein” brand products-my question: Do they contain a multitude of “preservatives” which are “not good?” I’ve avoided the “pre-packaged” frozen vegan items and stuck to “pure/unseasoned/unsalted,etc” veges fresh and frozen only (yes, I am and have been a vegan for quite a while now-years)…anyway-I try to avoid “preservative-laden frozen foods” and thus try to reduce my risk of cancer and diseases. An answer please & thanks.

  • Lisa says:

Are you certain that Gardein products are vegan? I need to check the ingredients. A sales clerk @ my local Whole foods told me the product contains egg whites. Wondering if anyone knows?

  • Ruth says:

Thank you for this article. I have tried the chik’n strips for fajitas and tarragon chicken salad. DH didn’t know the difference :-) I agree with VeganBelle about Trader Joe’s. The Mandarin Chicken bites are great and TJ’s meatless meat balls are the best I have tried. TJ’s labeling system also lets me know if I am buying vegetarian or vegan also. Their Vodka Marinara sauce is vegan also!!

  • Susie says:

Hello everyone! My husband and I have come to the realization that we want to become vegetarian/vegan for health reasons. But where to begin??! We have kids too so we need to ease them into it. I’m planning to hit Trader Joe’s tomorrow and would love some grocery list suggestions. Please share some tips with me. We are very serious about this. Thanks! :-)

I LOVE Gardein! They are an absolute must in my house. My favs are the Beefless Tips and the Mandarin Orange Crispy Chick’n. Oh yea and their burgers of course!

  • kimmay says:

Id like to see these gardeins come here in Maine!! But maybe I can try check out at natural stores if they has em.

  • Melissa says:

Gardien is a MUST!!! My faves are the burger and the buffalo “chicken”. I also make a lot of soup~ so good!! Daiya cheese is another staple as well as bananas for Green Monsters :)

  • Tanya says:

I find I don’t really missing eating the “meat”. I do keep a few things on hand for emaregencies, but learned to make my own falafel from a friend at work. I use it in place of meat on my tacos with veggie shreads and tofutti sourcream. I really like making as much as I can fresh to stay away from the chemical preservatives.

  • VeganBelle says:

If you are lucky enough to live close to a Trader Joe’s, check them out for great vegan options! I am excited to see they are offering more vegan choices every month. My two current favorite new freezer items are their Mandarin Chicken-less bites and a decadent Chocolate Gelato made in San Francisco. Their Meatless Meatballs are always a staple as well!

  • Judy Lindow says:

The first time I went veg. I fell off the wagon because all I ate was peanut butter and Subway veg. sandwiches – this time I stock lots of variety! Yum. Soy vanilla, meatless chorizo, veggie cheezes, torfutti cream cheeze, Marry me torfutti bars, apples-tangerines-bannanas – only 1 or 2 each so they’re fresh – lots of nuts, veggies, wheat tortilla, boca burgers, noodles, sometimes I treat myself to vgn freezer entres, and more.

  • Casey says:

Love the Gardein products, they fill my freezer. Especially like the Chipotle Lime Crispy Fingers… yummy!

  • Marie says:

I love Gardein products! Unfortunately, I cannot afford to buy a large quantity each week. I mainly snack on fruits and veggies since they’re what I always enjoyed. Experimenting with salads and combining new flavors is fun.

  • Mark Jackson says:

I love the way the majority of this vegan nosh & vegan make-up is ONLY available in the sodding US! Why bother having a Peta UK? Why is everything decent so marginalised. Then again major corporations (i.e all the bad ones) do own the world. Seems to me you can import anything from anywhere as long as it’s dead. Not impressed, from a VERY disgruntles UK resident.

  • katie says:

amys vegan pizza, this is the best pizza I have ever had vegan or non vegan!!! Anything from Rice dream, I love there ice cram sandwiches. Now I am hungry!

  • lyh735 says:

I actually don’t have much faux meats or animal-substitutes in my fridge, though–after all, they tend to get pretty expensive and it’s a bit more difficult to find vegetarian/vegan “convenience” foods, where I live. Knowing how to cook, plus a bit of creativity, makes veganism ten times easier. ;P I say just stock up on a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and soy. :) If I do buy faux meats, however, I prefer something more versatile, i.g. Morning Star Chik’n Strips (however you spell it), which can be prepared in many different ways, instead of a pre-cooked microwave dinner or the like.

  • indycar01 says:

why are all the pizzas in the supermarket (in health food section) vegetarian?!?….. WHY no vegan, WHY cant they replace dairy with rice, or soy… even AMYS has no vegan pizza. ALL these companys need to do business with RICE OR SOY companys. NOT dairy companys!!….

  • DorothyP says:

I, too, love the Gardein products. At Christmas time I had a great “turkey” dinner, thanks to Gardein! It was both affordable and tasted great. I also keep home made soups and cooked veggies that I make in bulk and then freeze in meal sized portions. I go to great lengths to buy local (a cabbage for $1 and a turnip for $1.99 make a lot of meals, and healthy ones at that).

  • Andrea says:

I use the beefless tips and add them to a bag of frozen organic broccoli, make my own sauce with soy sauce and cornstarch and make yummy, easy and fast “beef” and broccoli. Gardein really is the best faux meat.

  • Don says:

I am making “Chicken” Scallopni with a Ginger Sesame Sauce for dinner tonight. I really like the Gardien products. Very yummy!

  • Debbie says:

I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years. Just recently watched “Forks Over Knives” and was horrified. My issue is that I do not like anything that tastes or reminds me of meat…and looking through the grocery I am shocked to see how many items contain dairy and eggs. HELP! I am so hungry!!

  • jenn says:

Looks just like my freezer! Gardein is a constant in there!

  • RussoFamily1207 says:

I am not Vegan but my family and I are vegetarian and we do love the Gardein products! I love using the faux beef chunks and making “beef” stroganoff. Its so yummy!

  • Kathleen says:

Qourn is trying to go vegan, which is great! They are starting with veggie burgers!

  • Karen Sampson says:

One of our favorite items is homemade Chickpea Cutlets…I make up a batch to keep in the freezer in packs of four. The recipe is in Veganomican, a great cookbook!

  • Bea says:

A whole lot of Amy’s — I’m also fond of those little Tofuitti ice cream sandwiches. I like that they’re snack-sized, and although they’re made with tofu, they taste just like regular ice cream sandwiches — I try to have one every night as my treat!

  • Belinda says:

I really, really dislike the term “faux meat”. It is like saying that the meat-eaters have it right and we are just eating fake food. Soy protein is delicious and nutritious. Why does it have to be fauz anything?

  • Darci says:

I LOVE Gardein veggie spring rolls!!!!! Besides that in my freezer there’s a lot of fruit sorbets and sweet potato fries! Yum!

  • Delaney says:

Ugh!! They dont sell any vegan food near were I live. :c

  • Akita says:

Strange fridge with all this faux meat and precooked stuff, even pizza?!? How do you cook?

  • Paul says:

I make amazing chili and lasagna with Yves Ground Round Most people can’t tell the difference

  • Maud Laurent says:

I just tried Gardein products about a month ago, and now I eat them all the time. They have become a staple in my freezer, including other brands such Morning Star, and Boca Burgers.

  • jesse.anne.o says:

Amy’s veggie burgers, Amy’s vegan mac n’ cheese, Amy’s tofu scramble breakfast burritos and frozen strawberries and bananas for smoothies.

I do really like those Almond Dream bites (above) and Banana Babies dark chocolate frozen bananas.

  • Pauline says:

My vegan freezer is filled with home made soups and bean stews. Once a week I batch make a different soup or stew, divide into individual portion and freeze. I cook what’s in season or on sale and I’m always looking for new recipes to try.
