Ditch Dairy This Month

June is National Dairy Month. GAG! Does this look appetizing to you? If you’re ready to ditch dairy products, take a look at these great product recommendations that are sure to help you make the switch. They’re all endorsed by yours truly! 🙂

Milk alternatives come in many forms, and thanks to large demand, they’re readily available in grocery stores across the country. Whether you prefer flavored or unsweetened, soy or hemp, you’ll be able to find the perfect milk alternative for drinking and baking. My personal favorite just happens to be Silk Pure Almond Milk. It’s creamy, it’s filling, and it has only 90 calories per serving!

Looking for the perfect topping for some vegan nachos? Look no further than Tofutti Sour Supreme. This cool topping is perfectly whipped and would fool even the most ardent dairy fans.

Now on to what seems to be most vegetarians’ downfall: cheese. There are tons of brands, styles, and flavors, but my favorite is Daiya Mozarella Shreds. It melts. It stretches. It tastes good cold or cooked. All in all, it’s an incredible product. And even better: It’s available in numerous national grocery stores like Kroger’s and Giant Eagle.

If you’re looking to beat the heat, look no further than So Delicious for tempting frozen treats. I adore the soy-based Neapolitan. (The company also makes coconut-milk–based ice cream, which is great for those with soy allergies!) I’ve even fooled a few nonvegan friends with this unstoppable combination of creamy vanilla, sweet strawberry, and rich chocolate!

    I would switch to soy milk if it didn’t taste like someone pooed in it.

    The hardest part for me switching over from vegetarianism to being vegan is my soy intolerance. With the exception of milk, almost all dairy substitutes are soy. Does anyone know of good diary substitutes (other than milk) made from something other than soy? It’s also difficult to buy local and within season during Midwest winters, so I unfortunately have to buy processed foods often in the cold months. I don’t have enough time to do a lot of my own home preserving either. If anyone has suggestions for that too, I’d greatly appreciate it.

    @Cerydwyn – I completely understand! As a grad student living on a stipend, soy cheese is too expensive to have regularly. So I make my own feta from tofu, “cheesy” sauce from soymilk and nutritional yeast, etc. There are some really delicious and affordable recipes for cheese alternatives on

    @Melissa, you can make your own nut milks, including almond. You simply blend the nuts with water, and then strain this through a cheese cloth.

    After reading scientific data about dairy I’ve tried removing it from my diet a couple years ago. I find it impossible without being extreme (eating out, at parties, etc would be difficult), so accept that a small amount remains.
    While always healthy, I’ve noticed an improvement–I have more energy and less mucus. The body LIKES not having dairy!

    Is Silk Pure Almond milk organic? I just read recently that non-organic almonds in the US are all irradiated – a type of sterilization, which kills many of their most beneficial properties.

    However, I do happen to really enjoy So Delicious vegan ice cream once in awhile – particularly the cookies and cream and the mint versions.

    I also really love Okanagan’s Soya Co. faux Mozzerella cheese. I used the former to make a vegan cheese sauce and it was sooo good. It actually tasted better than when I’d previously used the same recipe, but with dairy cheese. Unfortunately, it does have casein though, so it isn’t completely vegan. 🙁

    Soyummi puddings, which I also enjoy, are completely vegan. Have you tried them yet?

    We don’t drink milk, and I would be happy to switch to soy cheese, but mostly can’t find it where I live, and when I can it is prohibitively expensive. With a family, can’t afford it………
