Fashion Friday: Building a Better Workout Wardrobe

No, you don’t need to look glamorous to get a good workout, but there is something to be said for feeling well put together—whether you’re heading to the office or hitting the gym. Besides, when it comes to getting fit, the old saying about using “the right tool for the job” is a good rule to follow.

Old cotton T-shirts and sweatpants may be convenient and comfortable, but they could be robbing you of a more intense, productive workout. As you perspire (there, I said it!), jersey cotton absorbs and holds moisture and heat—weighing you down. Active wear specifically designed to wick away sweat allows you to feel drier, cooler, and lighter as you burn calories and build muscle. Curve-hugging compression garments keep everything, uh, “in place” even during your most vigorous cardio moves.

Properly fitting shoes are a must. There are sports-shoe manufacturers out there that offer appropriate fitness shoes without the dead cow coverings—you just need to look for them. Don’t get me started on the benefits of cushioned activity-specific socks! Try a pair, and you’ll see what I mean.

While not clothing, an essential piece of fitness gear is a large, reusable water bottle. You lose a lot of water during a workout, and you want to replace it without fear of leaching plastic chemicals or junking up the planet.

And, while I’m on the subject … experts recommend that you replenish nutrients and energy by eating a combination of protein and carbohydrates within 30 to 45 minutes of an active workout. A small banana with a little peanut butter or a cup of vegan yogurt are great choices. If you’re always “on the run” after your session at the gym, keep a stash of vegan energy bars in your gym bag, purse or car. Just watch the calories—you don’t want to undo the work you just did!

Bottom line: Looking good can help you feel better while you’re getting fit! What’s your favorite piece of activewear or exercise gear?
