Back-to-School in the Bag, Freebies to Nab!

The following is a guest post by PETA staffer Royale.

It’s August, and you know what that means—back to school! As far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved this month for that very reason. Not that I loved going back to school, but the shopping that commences just before one does so is, well, worth submitting to the semesters that follow. Although I graduated from college five years ago, I still go “back-to-school shopping”—hey, it’s nostalgic, and I’m practicing for when I have children of my own. So whether you’re heading back to the classroom or just want to honor tradition (hehe), you’re going to need a bag to carry you through until spring.

Some of you might be surprised to learn that millions of animals are slaughtered each year and turned into shoes, handbags, belts, and other accessories. With tons of fashionable and cruelty-free alternatives available, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that killing animals just ain’t smart. So don’t fail your animal friends this fall—go faux for all your back-to-school fashions.

Studious or studious, I’ve got just the satchels you’ve been searching for. Plus, two lucky winners have a chance to win my fabulous Navoh picks (this teacher’s playing favorites: the Christopher and Chambers) by leaving a comment below! Tell me what cruelty-free products you’d carry in your new bag—if there’s one thing that I like as much as accessories, it’s makeup!

I’d also carry it to school because when I get new peta stuff I always tell people about the cause and they’d be sure to ask where I got one of these bags! 🙂

Also, my PETA lip balm, can’t wait to try and get that from the street team goods (almost there!).

I’d love to get one of these for my mom, though. She could use a stylish, new purse.<3 She’d be absolutely in LOVE with these~

Plus, her birthday is September 17th (mine is the 12th, FYI. we used to celebrate on both days when I was a kid so I’d come to school and everyone had to sing to me on both days because that was my mom’s wish, haha).

  • Christine says:

I can’t go anywhere without my MAC powder, lip gloss and liner. Otherwise, it’s my essentials – wallet, cell phone, eyeglass case, and date book. But I think the best thing I’ll be carrying around is a SMILE – after winning a gorgeous bag from an organization that is close to your heart, who couldn’t??

  • Gigi says:

  • AlexaJusto says:

I prepare to go back to school by making large quantities of food and then freezing them! Im a college student so I need all the help I can get-since there ARENT any vegan or vegetarian places on campus 🙁 PLUS its WAY affordable and quick for us on the constant GO!!! These are two of my favorite delish and easy “freeze and reheat” ideas: Veagan veggie Soup with Barley- and Hearty 6 bean soup -they are full of nutrients AND FLAVOR(these two turn out perfect as “freeze and reheat” :p ** Also NO “tested on animals” products make my bag (obviously!)

  • Holly Cooper says:

Definitely cruelty free makeup, dried fruit, and cruelty free athletic shoes to change into for practice.

  • Jocelyn Humphries says:

These bags are perfect for back to school 🙂 It will be my first semester of college this fall, and I am a little nervous but looking forward to telling people about the choices I make when they say “hey that looks yummy”, or “wow where did you get that top”, or maybe even “hey great bag!”, and then I can tell them more about the product and encourage them to make similar choices because not only are they compassionate to animals and our environment but they also look great!! 🙂 I would carry my peta agenda so I can share fun facts with my friends, and my “Im not a nugget” pencil case, and the stickers that I would share to encourage people to go veg. I would also carry my favorite snack “raw balls” in my bag for snack, and my favorite vegan lip balm 🙂

  • Helen says:

I’d carry with me my makeup kit filled with cruelty free cosmetics from The Body Shop. I disdain makeup that is tested on animals. I’ve done research on it during my college years, and have even written a paper about animal testing in the cosmetics industry, so I am very concerned with this matter.

  • Maggie says:

I think this is a good campaign, I don’t use handbags so do not wish to win one, but I would like to make a couple of points, or perhaps ask questions.

Why do we make fake fur & fake leather, whilst no animal has been killed (hopefully) to produce these products, isn’t wearing anything that looks like an animal’s skin sending out the wrong message?
Also fake leather is so ‘real’ looking, how do people know the difference unless you tell them? And I suspect that in busy cities people do not get the chance to stop & talk to strangers, all that often.

I am confused by some of the responses here, some of the brands mentioned are not cruelty free, vegetarian or vegan – can I suggest that someone post links to websites that will suggest cruelty free alternatives to regular cosmetics.

Also can I ask if anyone has thought up an alternative to bikers leathers, I understand that bikers use leather as a form of protection in case they come off their bikes, I wonder if there is a ‘non animal made’ alternative which is strong enough to protect them?

Sorry I don’t mean to belittle this campaign I think everything we do to protect animals is worthwhile. xxx

  • Kyra says:

Since I’m going to vegetarian culinary school in New York City in the fall, I would put all of my supplies in it! I don’t wear much make-up, so I would use it to carry my knifes, chef’s coat and chef’s hat all around the city! 😛

  • Amy Gackowska says:

PETA leaflets to give to anybody I meet

  • Vrinda Raje Singh says:

I do not feel the need to carry anything in the bag as carrying the bag intself will be like carrying the PETA message to everywhere I go.

  • Jessica Duffy says:

So I couldn’t help but notice some of the comments previous women have made about carrying burt’s bees lip balm. I thought I would inform everyone of the fact that it’s not vegan. I’m not sure about all the differrent types, but I know the regular one has lanolin in it, which is a sheep by-product. There’s sooo many hidden ingredients in products, so as a consumer it is important to research rather than assume!

But anyhow, if I had one of these lovely bags,I would carry my recycable water bottle, fruit, hair brush,a good book and other basic essentials to get me through the day. I probably wouldn’t carry too much make-up for I tend not to wear it. I like the natural look 🙂

  • karen says:

I carry my lunch in my bag. Usually some soy yogurt and a piece of fruit. Cute bags!

  • Kristi says:

Your bags are amazing! Functional and yet they have something different and unique about each one of them!! Since im a big bag kind of gal I tend to carry everything in it. Notebook made from recycled paper, and recyclable pens that come with a seed in them to be planed after the ink is gone are just a few things i keep with me! I also like to keep a reusable bag with me at all times… you never know when your gonna need to run to the store! And of course i have to keep my make-up with me for those times you need a touch up 🙂

  • Toni Vladimirova says:

I am all about Burt’s Bees lip balm and Bare Essentials powder. I always carry my lunch with me, too, since I am a teacher and we get a very short break to eat; I love my veggie wraps and rice balls. I also make a mean vegan brownie!
My daughter has a gorgeous navoh bag. I want to rock one, too!

  • Adriana Rodriguez says:

I am a new happy PETA member!! I am trying to learn as fast as I can all the companies and brands that do not test on animals.

The cruelty free products I would carry in my bag would definitely be my “Kiss My Face” products. I always carry their lotions and sun screen with me and my Victoria Secrets lotion (I can be without smelling good!!)

As I am trying to become a vegeterian too I will be carring some dry fruit, nuts and water.

I will be thrill if I can be a winer!! I never win anything but I keep my spirit up, I always think maybe next time, so I will see if this is the one.

Thanks and keep the good work you do!!!!!!!

  • Caedran says:

So cute, would be awesome to carry my books to class in, and show off how great cruelty free can look!

  • Iliana says:

Those bags are awesome, thanks for such great giveaway! Even if I don’t win I’ll still spread the word about these fabulous cruelty free bags 🙂

  • Allison Hurwitz says:

    The Christopher bag rocks!
Definitely would carry Tarte lip gloss; a Pink Lady apple; notepad + pencil.
    (And I’d be oh-so-vegan-chic 😉

  • Jessica Delon says:

So cute and cruelty free. Hard to find where I live.
