Back-to-School in the Bag, Freebies to Nab!

The following is a guest post by PETA staffer Royale.

It’s August, and you know what that means—back to school! As far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved this month for that very reason. Not that I loved going back to school, but the shopping that commences just before one does so is, well, worth submitting to the semesters that follow. Although I graduated from college five years ago, I still go “back-to-school shopping”—hey, it’s nostalgic, and I’m practicing for when I have children of my own. So whether you’re heading back to the classroom or just want to honor tradition (hehe), you’re going to need a bag to carry you through until spring.

Some of you might be surprised to learn that millions of animals are slaughtered each year and turned into shoes, handbags, belts, and other accessories. With tons of fashionable and cruelty-free alternatives available, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that killing animals just ain’t smart. So don’t fail your animal friends this fall—go faux for all your back-to-school fashions.

Studious or studious, I’ve got just the satchels you’ve been searching for. Plus, two lucky winners have a chance to win my fabulous Navoh picks (this teacher’s playing favorites: the Christopher and Chambers) by leaving a comment below! Tell me what cruelty-free products you’d carry in your new bag—if there’s one thing that I like as much as accessories, it’s makeup!

And I can’t forget my check book for when I go to no-kill shelters and help them with small (but with much love) donations.

I only use cruelty-free products and have become completely vegan Since Sept. 1, 2009. It first began when I was 19 years old (a REALLY long time ago!) when I stopped eating veal because of how they treated baby cows and have progressively taken out meat. I have been dairy-free for about 15 years now. The cycle is now full-circle. Thank you PETA for keeping us all in tune with the other beautiful species on this planet.

  • Katelyn says:

I am sickened by the cruelity to animals. I am am peta member, do not eat meat, and refuse to buy anything that has been tested on animals. The fact that people walk around with bags make of animal skin, and fur is just terrible. I will continue to speak to people about being a vegan, and cruelity to animals, even if they pretend to not listen, I know they are getting my message.

  • Lauren Brown-Washburn says:

I have always been a strong advocate for animal protection. I have been a vegetarian for three years and I use cruelty-free beauty supplies, including Beyond the Zone hair products, Tresemme shampoo & conditioner, and Bath & Body Works lotions.

As a young female, I enjoy fashion and I like to be stylish. As a young female in law school, I am also broke. Between working as an unpaid intern and paying the ridiculously high tuition, I have had to sacrifice shopping, eating out, and traveling. But I will pay any price for cruelty-free products.

If I were lucky enough to sport one of the beautiful Navoh bags, I would fill it with animal-friendly supplies. I would carry my makeup bag filled with supplies from Almay (foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, mascara, liner, eyebrow pencils, and bronzer). I would also put in my Pangea Organics chapstick and my favorite lip gloss, Zuzu Luxe. And because I can’t leave my house without some yummy-smellies I would also carry a small bottle of the White Tea Ginger lotion and some of the Coconut Lime Verbana body spray, both from Bath & Body Works.

It is also worth mentioning that I am notorious for carrying dog treats and little doggie bones in my purse. I carry them for my Yorkie and Australian Shepard, but it is always fun to have little treats for the dogs I see while walking around campus, to the courthouse, or at the local Farmer’s Market.

    Thanks! :)

My cruelty-free bag would be chock-full of cruelty free items like all my MAC cosmetics, earth friendly notebooks (put together from photocopier discards), Yves Rocher perfumes, Avon creams, and maybe a Revlon or O.P.I . nail polish thrown in for good measure. I’m sure there would be plenty more in there but definitely no creepy Olay, Maybelline, Cover Girl, Herbal Essences, or L’Oreal products (ick!!)

  • Jade Moore says:

First I would carry my Matt & Nat Devendra wallet because it’s stylish, super cut, and socially responsible. Then I would need my advanced beauty tools makeup brushes made out of NuFibre instead of animal fibres along with my bath and body works essentials for touchups (oh and my sweet breath just in case I run into someone special!). I want to win one of these bags so bad! Please pick me!!! Jade

Along with my list of cruelty free make-up brands care of PETA, I also keep local numbers and business cards in my faux-leather wallet in case I need to call someone to help rescue an animal that’s been injured or in danger. In addition to that, my PETA checks are in there for when I need to be an ‘old lady’ and write someone a check, rather than swipe my debit card!
