Back-to-School in the Bag, Freebies to Nab!

The following is a guest post by PETA staffer Royale.

It’s August, and you know what that means—back to school! As far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved this month for that very reason. Not that I loved going back to school, but the shopping that commences just before one does so is, well, worth submitting to the semesters that follow. Although I graduated from college five years ago, I still go “back-to-school shopping”—hey, it’s nostalgic, and I’m practicing for when I have children of my own. So whether you’re heading back to the classroom or just want to honor tradition (hehe), you’re going to need a bag to carry you through until spring.

Some of you might be surprised to learn that millions of animals are slaughtered each year and turned into shoes, handbags, belts, and other accessories. With tons of fashionable and cruelty-free alternatives available, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that killing animals just ain’t smart. So don’t fail your animal friends this fall—go faux for all your back-to-school fashions.

Studious or studious, I’ve got just the satchels you’ve been searching for. Plus, two lucky winners have a chance to win my fabulous Navoh picks (this teacher’s playing favorites: the Christopher and Chambers) by leaving a comment below! Tell me what cruelty-free products you’d carry in your new bag—if there’s one thing that I like as much as accessories, it’s makeup!

I love bags and would love to win one!

  • Kat says:

I always carry some vegan jerky for emergencies!

  • Maria Zoccola says:

Ooh, I’m loving the studded bags. I’ve had the same messenger bag from one of the online vegan stores for years–the poor thing’s falling apart! I always carry around one of PETA’s cruelty-free shopping guides, and some Urban Decay eyeshadow. Odds are I’ll have some tasty vegan snack in there too!

  • Jessica says:

I don’t understand why anyone would want to spend lots of money for parts of cow corpse. These bags are far superior.

  • Linda Higgins says:

I do not wear make up any more, we do not need any more chemicals in our body, nor do we need to add to the useless suffering of animals. I will carry required legal identification. I also always carry dog and cat treats to give to the homeless or an abandoned animal to help them.

  • Rebecca says:

Those bags are so awesome! I would carry my cruelty free ESPE wallet and my Yes to Carrots lip butter.

  • Karen says:

What beautiful bags, it is so hard to find stylish vegan bags and would love to get my hands on one of these… Of course, I would carry around my favorite vegan items such as my Kiss My Face Tinted Moisturizer, some ZuZu Luxe lip gloss and my BWC blush!

    Thanks for the opportunity.

  • Emily says:

I am starting a new animal rights/vegetarian activist group on campus and could use one of these bags as an example of cruelty-free products–and also to carry pamphlets and advertisements for my organization around! Most girls in America can’t function without a purse, so one of these bags would definitely help attract members. Free and effortless advertising!

  • Michelle van Zyl says:

Here are the make-up brands against animal cruelty I would choose:
    1. The Body Shop Sweet Lemon Lip Butter
    2. Urban decay eye shadow in vibrant purple eye and shadow black- just use a little bit to add some drama for the evening
    3. Dermalogica make up removing wipes – amazing!!
    4. Mac lip gloss – viva glam V – pinkish gloss which is great for day or evening

Keep in mind that even though a company claims to not engage in animal testing, it DOES NOT mean they completely don’t test on animals. The law is very lax, so all it tells you is that particular line wasn’t tested, but because they already got enough information from animal testing from another line of theirs. According to one of the sites, Avon actually DOES test on animals. On another though, it says they don’t. I’d do a bit more research…I didn’t know this either 🙁 !

The “Let Them Eat Cake Bag” is gorgeous!

I am headed back for another year of University. What would I be carrying in my bag? I would be carrying my recycled notebooks and pencils. I always need to have my make-up with me, so I would have Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics in my bag. Youngblood is oil, chemical, artificial fragrance and dye free. They do not test on animals and they are environmentally responsible. The packaging of Youngblood is certified by the FSC and is printed with soy ink. I love Youngblood! I would also be carrying some food with me for when I get hungry during class. I am a vegetarian so my typical in-class snack is dried blueberries (delicious) and almonds (natural – not roasted of course) and my Klean Kanteen filled with water.

I hope I win a bag. They are all so beautiful!

  • Jaimie K says:

I just found Dr Bronner’s Lip Balm. Didn’t know they made more than soap

  • Lita says:

I don’t wear make up prefering to stay as nature intended. I wish the same for the animals too and not be turned into handbags. So I guess I’d be carrying some yummy fruit and some muesli bars.

  • jenny says:

Looking in my current bags, I’d probably carry 3 kinds of handmade lip balm (I’m a junkie) Urban Decay’s 24/7 eye liner in Lucky and their eyeshadow in Half-Baked. My fiance is so tired of my asking him to carry at least my lip gloss when we go places that I can’t carry my reclaimed purses (my favorite is a woven rice bag, not exactly good for weddings or nice nights out).

Then of course my phone, wallet, and a larabar for a quick easy snack.

  • Reem kattan says:

I would carry a few things, especially when traveling: my kindle, my mp3 player, my cell phone,my wallet, make up (which includes anything by The Body Shop and other cruelty free and natural make up) like bare minerals foundation, natural lip balm, travel sized-hand cream, a cute compact mirror, a small brush, travel-sized moisterizer and lotion (cruelty free, of course), a small note pad and pen, and of course, a small digital camera to capture good moments on the go!

  • Niamh says:

Those bags are gorgeous! It’s impossible where I live (Belfast, Ireland) to get animal and nature friendly clothing and accessories that is fashionable. Sometimes I buy things I don’t like just because I want to support it and hope they’ll make things I’d actually consider wearing.

But wow! I would carry (as I always do in my bags) my recycled pens and my favourite ethical brands Illamasqua and E.L.F, whatever I have on me from them that day 🙂
