I recently lost my dog in a divorce, but believe me, he was my best friend. I would take him anywhere I could, granted the temperature outside would allow. I think that's all he really wanted was to be with me all the time, and be my friend. Dogs are so great!

Well, I have to agree with 99% of this article. However, a dog does not want to stop and sniff any chance they get. A dog in a pack, wishes not to lead, but to follow. Your best friend would prefer not to deal with the stress of being in charge of that walk, nor do they want the stress of protecting their pack members. You being the leader of the walk allows your pup to relax, and get the physical and mental exercise they desire. People often forget that a dog is a dog, and not a human, and so they think that their dog wants what they would want.

To Ani, I know Peta is against 'pets' and I also agree them and why they are. However, I also know 'farmcats' only live around two years; with that said a wild cat or dog would probably live the same amount of time. I think it is best for us to have companion animals not pets like the companion in your life sort of spending time with them taking good care of them. But it would be much nicer if humans didn't hurt them and breed them. I'd also like to say if all companion animals were wild they wouldn't have veterinary care. To conclude animals who are wild would not have all that we provide but they also would not have the freedom of a wild animal.

Nice, but dogs often prefer "old" water when fresh is available, even stagnant ponds, and it doesn't seem to cause them any problems. Also, dogs can go for very long periods without "bathroom breaks" as you coyly call them without suffering, as witnessed by all the times I open the door for my dog in the morning, but he hangs around waiting for me instead.

Wow...you people all seem pretty uneducated. You know PETA is AGAINST having pets in the first place, right? Yep, that's right. If it were up to them, no one would have any pets whatsoever. Don't believe me? This is directly from their website: "We believe that it would have been in the animals' best interests if the institution of "pet keeping"—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as "pets"—never existed." Where I go, my dog goes. But, there are times (especially after work) when I do the "rush walk"...I have to make myself slow down!!! But, I think even with that kind of fault, Eli forgives me...after all, he sleeps with me, goes where I go (except work) and gets so spoiled every other way! LOL
