10 Reasons Why My Dog Is My Valentine

The following article was written by Keegan Baur.

Valentine’s Day is the day when we cherish our loved ones and shower them with affection. We each choose a valentine and make every effort to show that special someone just how much we truly appreciate him or her. But who says “that someone” has to be human? For everyone who’s “in love” with a furry, four-legged canine, let’s take a moment to reflect on why we’re so crazy about our dogs.

1. My dog joyously greets me every time I come home.

2. My dog is always in the mood to cuddle.

We now have 3 more dogs since last year, two pitbulls (Champ and Lissy) and a mix (Marilou), they are also our younger kids, we love them soooo much!!! They all have brought great meaning to our lifes and we take them everywhere, walks in the afternoons, to the beach, to the river. We are all just really one big happy family!!!

Poppy-Angel and I met a year ago at the dogs home. It was lovely just getting to know each other. Every day I have learned something new, fun and interesting with her. I discovered to my joy that she can play football, is an excellent goalie, she is a gentle friend to little kids, a brave she warrior in my defence and the best friend I could ever have. It really was my lucky day when this starved, scruffy Yorkshire Terrier came into my life to change it completely for the better, make me laugh and be my beloved Valentine:-)

When I get home in the evening of a work day, Ripley Rose (a mixed breed 45 lbs. rescue) is full of excitement. At 2 years of age this Valentine’s Day, she is FINALLY learning to not jump on people. But this is the most challenging time for her. To help facilitate this time of day, we introduced the ‘You know the drill’ routine.
I’ll come in and turn my back to her, putting the keys, knap sack with Macbook, etc on the table in the living room. I’ll turn around and she is dying with excitement to give me kisses and clean my ears (our joke – something about my ears makes her crazy). I’ll say ‘You know the drill’, and she runs to the sofa where she will jump up on the back rest as I walk over. Now she can give me all the love she wants.

I have always loved animals, especially the dogs. Being “born and raised” with dogs, I had at least one dog around me all the time. My latest one is a white German Sheppard. He is the best, sweetest, smartest, loving and carrying pup I could ask for. I love him and every moment I spend with him. And even though I spoil him to death, he is smart enough to know the limits. For both of us ;-). He’s always with me, for me and I am and will always be there for him. I need him as much as he needs me and simply cannot remember how it was not having him around.

You are my special Valentine always! x

Dogs. Is there anything more joyous than a happy dog? How does anyone live without a dog? Is it really living? No matter what size, shape, color, fur quality —you have companionship and comfort and good times all bundled up in one perfect package. More satisfying and gratifying than a box of chocolates. What’s not to love?
