The following is a post by former PETA celebrity marketing coordinator Lauren Gordon.

Madonna and Demi Moore have been spotted with it. So has Pamela Anderson. And Gwyneth Paltrow sings its praises. No, I’m not talking about the latest bag or gadget. The latest craze to hit Tinseltown comes in liquid form … coconut water!

There are plenty of reasons why coconut water has become the new go-to beverage. Aside from being light and refreshing, coconut water is a great hydrator and replenishes your body’s electrolytes. It provides vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, and phosphate—plus, it packs more potassium than a banana. Potassium, which promotes proper nerve and muscle function, combined with the sodium naturally found in coconut water, work together to make this an ideal post-workout beverage that helps your body recover and replenish minerals lost during activity. One cup of coconut water contains about 50 calories (make sure that whatever kind you drink does not contain added sugar)—coconut water is waaay healthier than those sugary sports drinks.

Coconut water is the liquid found inside young green coconuts, harvested before they mature into the brown coconuts. Whole coconuts can be purchased at natural and health-food stores. Now, brands like Vita Coco, Zico, and O.N.E. sell pre-packaged coconut water that is available at retailers across the country, making it easily accessible—and they even offer different flavors and varieties.

Are you totally nuts for coconuts? In addition to coconut water, check out some of the animal-friendly dairy alternatives derived from coconuts, such as coconut milk yogurt, coconut milk creamer, and deliciously decadent coconut milk ice cream. Have you tried coconut water yet? What did you think?
