Going Nuts … for Coconut Water!

The following is a post by former PETA celebrity marketing coordinator Lauren Gordon.

Madonna and Demi Moore have been spotted with it. So has Pamela Anderson. And Gwyneth Paltrow sings its praises. No, I’m not talking about the latest bag or gadget. The latest craze to hit Tinseltown comes in liquid form … coconut water!

There are plenty of reasons why coconut water has become the new go-to beverage. Aside from being light and refreshing, coconut water is a great hydrator and replenishes your body’s electrolytes. It provides vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, and phosphate—plus, it packs more potassium than a banana. Potassium, which promotes proper nerve and muscle function, combined with the sodium naturally found in coconut water, work together to make this an ideal post-workout beverage that helps your body recover and replenish minerals lost during activity. One cup of coconut water contains about 50 calories (make sure that whatever kind you drink does not contain added sugar)—coconut water is waaay healthier than those sugary sports drinks.

Coconut water is the liquid found inside young green coconuts, harvested before they mature into the brown coconuts. Whole coconuts can be purchased at natural and health-food stores. Now, brands like Vita Coco, Zico, and O.N.E. sell pre-packaged coconut water that is available at retailers across the country, making it easily accessible—and they even offer different flavors and varieties.

Are you totally nuts for coconuts? In addition to coconut water, check out some of the animal-friendly dairy alternatives derived from coconuts, such as coconut milk yogurt, coconut milk creamer, and deliciously decadent coconut milk ice cream. Have you tried coconut water yet? What did you think?

There seem to be some worrying stories about deforestation of rain forest for products like this. Good to check first before recommending it!

  • Cynthia says:

Growing up in India I always loved coconut water. Good to know what I did naturally is now being done by celebrities (not to forget yoga as well) and is proved to have all the good qualities and nutrients. Once you get a taste for coconut water it’s hard to resist it. My mouth waters whenever I travel to a tropial place and I start thinking coconut water be it Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Thailand or India :)

yes, we need to look more at the footprint of any new product, whether it appears to be environmentally sound or not! Just keep your diet animal free, simple, fresh, local, organic and ethical…that’s the best you can do! We don’t need tons more trendy products!!!!
And to think it might be good because celebs use it is wrong, wrong, wrong!!!

  • Guy says:

Not to mention that a percentage of these water bottles will end up in the rivers and oceans harming animals.

  • Guy says:

Dont you love it when we waste our precious recources on things such as plastic water bottles for cocounut water.

  • Alexandra says:

I agree with you Annie Batten Fine. If this coconut water is coming from areas like near the rain forest, that could mean that animals were harmed in the deforestation process. I think PETA should see where the source is before supporting this product.

  • JEAN says:

HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THE FLAVOR OF COCONUTS. WILL CERAINLY TRY THIS. GOOD WORK….

  • Annie Batten Fine says:

but just a question….if this ‘catches on’ where are the tons of coconuts going to be sourced from and what will they the processed drinks be packaged in? What we DON’T need is more over packaged (generally plastic) consumer goods and crops that may bring about more deforestation (think palm oil) and other negative consequences in already unstable environments. I’m still happy to drink filtered water from the tap, though mind you, I wouldn’t be saying no to a fresh coconut from an ethical source!

  • Jennifer says:

I tried the Vita Coco..I found it very refreshing!

I recently spent three weeks in Nicaragua, where you can find people selling young coconuts — or ‘pipas’ — on street corners everywhere. They’ll lop the top of the coconut off with a machete, handing you the delicious reservoir of coconut milk. Delicious!

Can I just say that I discovered coconut water from Dr. Oz. It’s part of his hang over cure recipe! Coconut water hydrates your body better than regular water.

P.S. His other hang over cures were taking 2 aspirin and glass of water before bed. In the am eat 2 eggs, drink coconut water and coffee.
