“At stockyards, I have seen cows dragged with ropes because they are too sick or injured to walk. I watched a dairy cow with a broken pelvis being moved in a bulldozer. I have seen a number of cows unable to walk [transported] in the bucket of bulldozers. At a slaughterhouse, I saw a newborn calf separated from her mother and left to die. Baby male Holstein dairy calves barely able to walk were being auctioned off daily. I saw a cow unable to walk dumped outside on a pile of dead animals, where she ... froze.”—Julie Derby, slaughterhouse investigator.

If you wouldn’t drink milk from a dog or a giraffe, it’s just as weird to drink milk from a cow! Human breast milk is designed for baby humans, giraffe milk is designed for baby giraffes, and cow’s milk is designed for—yes—baby cows!

Cows produce milk for the same reason that humans do—to feed their newborns. Farmers must keep cows pregnant and delivering calves in order to get milk. Their calves are traumatically taken from their mothers just days after birth so that humans can drink the milk that nature intended for the infant calves. Female calves are slaughtered or raised to follow in their mothers’ hoofprints. Male calves go to the veal industry to spend 14 weeks chained in dark crates so tiny that they can’t turn around in them. They see the light of day only on their way to slaughter.

On a typical dairy farm, cows stand on concrete, chained by the neck, in huge sheds and are milked by machines. To boost production, some farmers inject cows with synthetic growth hormones, which increase the cows’ risk of developing mastitis, a painful condition that causes cows’ udders to become so heavy that they sometimes drag on the ground.

Dr. John A. McDougall calls dairy foods “liquid meat” because they are as bad for you as the solid stuff. Loaded with fat and cholesterol, dairy products contribute to heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, allergies, asthma, and even osteoporosis, the bone-weakening disease that the dairy industry pretends it prevents. It’s easy to get plenty of calcium without milk—it’s in tofu, all green leafy veggies, beans, nuts, and calcium-fortified orange juice and soy milk.

After studying the diets of 78,000 women over a 12-year period, researchers at Harvard University concluded that milk does not protect against bone fractures, because milk’s high-protein content leaches calcium from the bones. Women who drank three glasses of milk perday had more fractures than those who rarely drank milk!
EXPERTS SAY, “DITCH DAIRY”:
“There’s no reason to drink cow’s milk at any time in your life. It was designed for calves, not humans, and we should all stop drinking it today.”
—Dr. Frank A. Oski, former director of pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University, author of the physicians’ textbook The Portable Pediatrician

I am convinced on the weight of the scientific evidence that milk does not ‘do a body good.’ Inclusion of milk will only reduce your diet’s nutritional value and safety. Most of the people on this planet live very healthfully without cow’s milk. You can, too.”
—Robert M. Kradjian, M.D.

“I no longer recommend dairy products....[T]here was a time when cow’s milk was considered very desirable. But research, along with clinical experience, has forced doctors and nutritionists to rethink this recommendation.”
—Dr. Benjamin Spock

“Dairy foods are the most harmful of the traditional four food groups.”
—Dr. John McDougall

“I sometimes challenge milk-drinkers by asking them if they would drink a glass of milk containing 1,000 pus cells. The average 12-ounce glass of milk in America contains 112,899,408 pus cells.”
—Robert Cohen, author of Milk: The Deadly Poison

“Billions of people on Earth who do not consume dairy products live healthy lives with a perfectly healthy calcium balance.”
—Dr. Charles Attwood

“Not long ago, it took four months for a dairy cow to produce her own weight in milk ... Now some cows who have been injected with bovine growth hormone produce their own weight in milk every eight days.”
—John Robbins, who renounced his Baskin-Robbins inheritance

Kids Go Great With Soy
In children, drinking milk is linked to ear infections, asthma, autism, intestinal bleeding, and juvenile diabetes, a disease that can cause blindness. In the seventh edition of his world-famous Baby and Child Care, America’s most respected pediatrician, the late Dr. Benjamin Spock, recommends that parents raise their children on a vegan diet. Children can get all the calcium they need from plant foods like broccoli, collards, sunflower seeds, almonds, kale, chickpeas, black beans, dried figs, cornbread, tofu, and fortified soy milk and orange juice—without the risk of developing serious health problems that could plague them for a lifetime.
