PETA’s 2002 Annual Litterbox Awards …for Inesc-ape-ably Stinky Ads
“The chimpanzee’s ‘smile’ so often seen on TV is actually a grin of fear.”
—Dr. Jane Goodall, Primatologist

Hold your nose! Here come the recipients of PETA’s 2002 Litterbox Awards.
Dr. Pepper Ad Dr. Pepper AdCan This Commercial!
The fizz must’ve gotten to the boss’s brain when he gave this dud the green light: Diet Dr. Pepper featured two chimpanzees dressed in police uniforms and riding motorcycles in a skit called “CHimPS.” These chimpanzees should be careening around in the trees, not on motorcycles.
Flush This Foul Ad!
In this ad by VoiceStream a chimpanzee in the jungle is e-mailing via a laptop with his chimpanzee friend at the DMV. “Phil, I passed,” types Hank. “You passed?” pops up on Hank’s cell phone. Someone surely passed something, but it wasn’t a test in compassion.
Earthlink Ad Disconnect This!
Earthlink’s ad asks, “Want a world with better connections?”
No, we just want a world with more respectful commercials: A researcher, communicating with a chimpanzee in sign language, asks him, “JoJo hungry? JoJo want banana?” The chimpanzee signs back, “JoJo want a ticket back to Uganda.” —compassionate commercials.
Capital “F” For...
Capital One credit card ad in which a hiker loses his card in the jungle. His buddy assures him,“Don’t worry— there’s not another human for miles.” Meanwhile, in a bungalow nearby, chimpanzees and orangutans swing from a disco ball, tear open packages, and groove to “Jungle Boogie” on a stereo they purchased with the stolen card. But Capital One is the real thief here, stealing baby chimpanzees from their mothers. Chimpanzees deserve more credit.
Etrade Ad Blast This Ad!
In E*Trade’s degrading ad, a baby chimpanzee dressed in a shiny green suit stars in a spoof commercial. The next morning, the chimpanzee is reamed out by E*Trade’s CEO, who asks, “A musical?! What were you thinking!? It’s a disaster!” The chimpanzee is fired and sent to Florida to become a “chimponaut.” When we asked E*Trade to blast this ad off the planet, the company wouldn’t trade cruelty for kindness.

Amtrak Ad
Gateway Ad
WITHDRAWN
After Amtrak received hundreds of your letters blowing the whistle on its ad offering a discount on trips to destinations “where you’ll find regional cuisine” with the tagline, “Increase your chance of eating alligator by 30 percent,” the company put the brakes on the commercial, apologizing, “Our intent was not to be disrespectful to animals,” and promised to strive for future consideration for one of PETA’s Glitterbox Awards, reserved for commercials that are animal rights-savvy, like this one from Gateway: While waiting at a patio table to order, a diner chitchats with his business partner, an animatronic cow, who’s just on the other side of a hedge of bushes. When the waiter finally appears, the diner pauses to think for a moment, and then decides on a salad.

This fresh ad takes PETA’s 2002 Glitterbox Award for capitalizing on compassion.
