Ban Hanna
Jack HannaHave you seen him on Good Morning America or another talk show with baby tigers in tow? He’s Jack Hanna, and he claims to “educate” audiences through his traveling exhibitions—really just infomercials for the exotic pet trade.

One of Hanna’s suppliers, Stump Hill Farm, has a long record with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for failing to provide veterinary care, shelter, water and space.

• Please ask Good Morning America to ban Hanna and his frightened animals from the show.

ACLU Wins PETA’s Right to Display “Sad Elephant” After PETA’s entry for Washington, D.C.’s display of decorated elephants was denied for its “political message,” PETA and the ACLU took the government to court—and won! Designed gratis by New Yorker cover artist Harry Bliss, PETA’s chained and weeping elephant wears a sign that reads,“The circus is coming. See shackles, bullhooks, loneliness, all under the big top.” Judge Richard J. Leon ruled that the government had violated the First Amendment by rejecting it.When our “Ellie” finally went on display in Washington, well-wishers placed flowers at her feet!

Cat Study Canned
Responding to pressure from members of Protect Our Earth’s Treasures, PETA and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine PCRM), Ohio State University agreed to stop killing cats in experiments purported to study the effects of methamphetamine (“speed”) on HIV. With a $1.7 million federal grant, veterinarian Michael Podell had been infecting cats with a diseasecausing virus and then killing and dissecting them—but because cats are naturally resistant to HIV, he used feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) instead of HIV.

Although required to do so under the Animal Welfare Act and other federal mandates, Dr. Podell apparently failed to consider non-animal alternative methods of study. Other studies of human patients, able to articulate their symptoms, hallucinations, delusions, or other problems, had already revealed the dangers of drug abuse in HIV-positive people.

“These experiments should never have begun,” said PCRM president Neal Barnard, M.D.“We are delighted that not one more animal will be used and that these funds can be freed up for more useful research purposes.”

PETA Victorious

With your help, we’ve had many victories for the animals.

•Seventy chickens were rescued from a Miami housing complex, where residents were shooting them with slingshots, hitting them with baseball bats, kicking them and stepping on them.

•Washington’s Spokane County Animal Control stopped selling homeless dogs and cats to Washington State University’s veterinary program, where they were being used in painful surgeries.

•An Indiana pit bull breeder who cut puppies’ ears off with scissors received one year in jail—one of the harshest sentences ever handed down for cruelty in that county.

• We secured a commitment from Corpus Christi Animal Control to stop gassing homeless animals in a homemade box.

• Orange County Animal Services madetwo McDonald’s locations in Florida shut down their alligator and turtle displays, where animals were being used for photo ops and were often killed with a baseball bat.

• We stopped Texas Tech’s pigeon-poisoning program for good.

• A chick-giveaway promotion at two Pennsylvania car dealerships was called off after PETA alerted authorities.

All 80 chicks were released to a sanctuary.

Cowgirl Cuties Dish Up “Roadkill” BBQ
cowgirl cutiesPETA’s sexy vegetarian gals—donning “Daisy Dukes” and cowgirl hats—rode south to dish up free samples of “Squashed Bunny Kebabs” (actually, soy-based faux chicken) to hungry lunchtime crowds. Why “roadkill”? PETA wants die-hard meat-eaters to ask themselveswhat the difference is between shrink-wrapped plastic packages in the supermarket and animals squashed on the side of the road.
Rue Battles Bullhooks, Big Top
Rue McClananhanEmmy-winning “Golden Girl” Rue McClanahan joined her hometown’s state representative, Raymond McCarter, at Oklahoma’s Capitol to screen footage of a circus trainer teaching others how to beat elephants until they scream.
The legislature has promised to “study” the issue.
