RESCUED!

In one scene from Edward Furlong's new movie, his character photographs two rats. When Edward found out that the rats were to be killed once the scene was shot, he scooped them up and took them home with him, and then called PETA to help him find a home for his tiny costars. "Animals aren't props to be discarded when the movie is over," says the softhearted heartthrob.

Edward Furlong does his laundry with a clean conscience! After reading PETA's description of Procter & Gamble's use of animals in product tests, the star of the new John Waters film, Pecker, returned his Tide laundry detergent to the company and demanded a refund--with the proceeds going to PETA!

Wrote Edward: "As a friend of animals, I have cleaned my house of anything and everything produced by your company."

The "basic four" animal tests commonly performed by companies are:

  • dripping substances into the eyes of restrained rabbits
  • smearing them onto guinea pigs' raw skin
  • forcing the substances down the throats of mice
  • forcing rats to inhale fumes.

Many animals subjected to these tortures shake, vomit, bleed from the nose and mouth, and convulse before dying.

Such tests are not required by law for cosmetic and household products, and they don't guarantee a person's safety. More than 550 companies have banned all animal tests and use modern methods, like cell cultures and human cells in vitro to test their products.

Edward--a longtime PETA supporter (he refused to wear leather for a Calvin Klein advertisement) urges everyone to join him in reforming Procter & Gamble. Says Edward, "Don't buy while animals die."

Here is how: Mail your Procter & Gamble products back to the company and explain why you want a refund (One Procter & Gamble Plaza, Cincinnati, OH 45202; in the U.K.: St. Nicholas Ave., Newcastle Upon Tyne NE99 1EE).

Rock legend Grace Slick has joined PETA's battle to end Procter & Gamble's animal tests by donating a percentage of royalties from her hit record "White Rabbit" to the campaign. "I want my contribution to help end the suffering of rabbits and other animals now being poisoned and killed by the makers of Tide, Crest, and Crisco," said Ms. SlickI
