Purrs to the Tony Award-winning show The Producers, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, for keeping animals out of the act. The Broadway hit features mechanical pigeon puppets instead of real birds suffering from stage fright. Thank-yous go to: Susan Stromen, Director and Choreographer, The Producers, St. James Theatre, 246 W. 44th St., New York, NY 10036.
Eddie Murphy Grrrs to Dr. Dolittle star Eddie Murphy, who thinks animals are disposable. Murphy told Entertainment Tonight, “Every now and again [my children will] have a dog or something (sic) for two or three months, and then it becomes too much. … I remember being out last year with this dog named Herb that we had—it was one of those little dogs, a Bichon, I think. He is not the kind of dog that I want to be walking! … [H]e’s out now.” Write Eddie Murphy c/o Arnold Robinson, Rogers & Cowan, 1888 Century Park E., Los Angeles, CA 90067.

Purrs to Animal Friends Insurance for offering vegetarians a carrot—in the form of cheaper life insurance rates. The new Vegetarian Term Life policy is the first in Britain to reward vegetarians—who are at lower risk of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses—for their healthy lifestyle. Please urge your insurance company to follow suit.
Christy Turlington Purrs to model Christy Turlington for telling the German edition of Vogue magazine that when she has children, she will raise them as “strict vegetarians.”
click to expand ... Grrrs to the RSPCA in Australia for endorsing cruelly produced “Liberty Barn-Laid” eggs. When Animal Liberation Victoria raided Pace Farms, the largest egg producer in Australia and producers of Liberty eggs, it found hens missing feathers and beaks (the birds’ upper beaks had been removed up to their nostrils), one weak hen being eaten alive and hens left to die in manure pits and empty sheds. Please tell the RSPCA that it should be prosecuting Pace Farms for cruelty, not taking money from the company. Write: Dr. Hugh Wirth, President, RSPCA, 3 Burwood Highway, Burwood East, VIC 3151 Australia; E-Mail: rspca@vicrspca.aust.com.
Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank Purrs to actors Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank for sweet-talking their way through police barricades surrounding the World Trade Center disaster’s “hot zone” and then climbing to the 31st floor of an evacuated high-rise to retrieve Lola, one lonely Labrador who had been waiting for four long days to be rescued. To thank them, write to: Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank c/o Hylda Queally, William Morris Agency, 151 El Camino Dr., Beverly Hills, CA 90212.
