Leather Trade Protest

To draw attention to the extraordinarily cruel and often illegal slaughter of cattle in India, PETA members “bludgeoned” a papier mâché cow on the steps of the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Corrupt skin-traders smuggle cattle across borders at night. The cows and calves, bought under false pretenses, are marched to slaughter for days and crammed into trucks, causing many to suffocate, all in direct violation of the Constitution of India.

“We are appealing to the prime minister to crack down on the people responsible for immeasurable suffering,” said PETA President Ingrid Newkirk.

Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney have also urged the government to stop the cruel transport of these animals.

Write to Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (c/o Embassy of India, Information Wing, 2107 Massachusetts Ave. N.W., Washington, DC 20008; or c/o The High Commission of India, India House, Aldwych, London WC2B 4NA) and urge him to enforce the laws that are supposed to protect cows from this kind of abuse.

“Bull” Steers Visitors Away From Bullfight
At La Monumental Plaza de Toros, the largest circle of death for bulls in the world, PETA launched a 30-second television commercial. It features a Spanish native expressing his sadness over the cruelty he witnessed as a child when taken to a bullfight. He urges tourists to stay away. The commercial aired in Tucson, Arizona, just across the border from Nogales, Mexico, where ticket sales for a new bullring were so low that the bullfights were canceled.

“Most tourists who go to a bullfight find the event sickening and regret going,” says PETA campaign coordinator Kristie Sigmon.

Donald Trump in the Doghouse
NBC’s Dateline exposé of the pet trade put the spotlight on Donald Trump, whose Trump Plaza houses Le Chien Pet Salon, a store that has sold dogs from Nielsen Farms, the target of a PETA investigation. PETA captured evidence of animal neglect and multiple violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act on undercover video footage at Nielsen, which was then charged by the USDA with failing to provide even basic necessities to the animals. PETA has appealed to landlord Trump to kick Le Chien out and offer the space to one of New York’s animal shelters for free. So far, no go.

Thank Dateline (Susan Barnett, Producer, 30 Rockefeller Plz., New York, NY 10112; e-mail: dateline@nbc.com) for its intelligent and thorough piece on the puppy mill and pet shop industries.

Ask Donald Trump (Trump Plz., 1044 Third Ave., New York, NY 12100) to cancel Le Chien’s lease. For more information on the Nielsen Farms case and how you can combat puppy mills, go to www.HelpPuppies.com.

Fireworks Fatal, Frightening
Massive fireworks displays cause countless terrified dogs and other animals to tremble and flee for their lives. After millennium celebrations, hundreds of birds washed up on Hawaiian shores, their deaths apparently caused by noise and enormous amounts of acrid smoke from fireworks displays. In Bethlehem, panicked doves were released at the precise moment that the city’s explosive display started. PETA is appealing to governments around the world to institute a “code of conduct” that includes provisions for animals and children in plans for future public celebrations.

Please write and ask your local mayor to implement a policy to ditch the fireworks in favor of laser light shows, which don’t terrify animals or small children.

Dump Cattle-Ranching Plan

PETA members dumped manure in front of the World Bank in Washington, D.C., to protest plans to loan $200 million to China for a cattle-ranching pilot program. Our action came after actor Alec Baldwin wrote to World Bank President James Wolfensohn about the ill-advised and irresponsible program, citing its inevitable animal cruelty and environmental and human health hazards.

Please help stop this funding of cruelty by writing to: Mr. James Wolfensohn, President, World Bank, 1818 H St. N.W., Washington, DC 20433.
