This is the story of Mandy, a pig whose suffering we can only imagine, but whose life is as real as that of every other pig raised and killed for sausage patties at Burger King. Mandy is pregnant, yet she’ll never know the joy of raising her piglets.

They will be taken from her and castrated without painkillers, have their tails amputated, get pumped full of hormones, and be crammed into a pen in another shed.

From her tiny, dark stall, unable even to turn around or lie down comfortably, Mandy may dream of feeling the sun on her back, nuzzling her piglets, and experiencing kindness, but the dream will never come true. The slatted cement floor on which she is forced to live day in and day out makes it difficult to sleep. There is nothing to see, nothing to do, nothing to smell but the fumes of ammonia from the manure accumulating in the pits beneath the floor. Mandy will never have any hay or a cozy spot to make a bed. She will never have even one toy to play with, as pigs love to do, or anything at all to break the monotony.

Mandy can sense what will happen to her, and she is frightened. She hopes she will be one of the “lucky” pigs who are slaughtered quickly, not left hanging, alive, by one leg, while the blood drains from their bodies.
It’s too late for Mandy—many people still eat meat. She only wishes that things will have changed by the time her piglets are born.
