PETA's Animal Times
PETA's Animal Times

PETA’s massive international campaign against McDonald’s began last fall, when we called off two years of negotiations because the company failed to make any substantial improvements for the millions of animals raised in horrifying conditions for its restaurants each year.

To date, PETA has organized more than 400 demonstrations against McDonald’s in 23 countries on six continents. Our graphic in-your-face billboards and newspaper advertisements are taking the sugar-coating off the Happy Meals, showing consumers the used-up, battered and miserable animals who are slaughtered to become McDonald’s products.

Why We Had to Take Action...

McDonald’s has refused to alleviate horrific conditions for chickens and pigs on its farms, despite a judicial ruling that found McDonald’s “culpably responsible” for cruelty. McDonald’s has not even attempted to require slaughterhouses to meet humane standards for slaughter, as defined by the U.S. federal government. It has refused to make even the simplest changes, such as hiring a second stunner on slaughter lines to decrease the number of animals who are skinned alive.

McDonald’s laying hens are still raised in cages so small that from four to seven hens share a space not much larger than a file drawer, and their cages are stacked in warehouses that hold as many as 100,000 hens. Although federal recommendations state that chickens should have at least 2 square feet of space, McDonald’s allots just .55 square feet, which isn’t enough space for a chicken to spread even one wing. Breeding pigs raised for McDonald’s are confined for their entire lives to cement stalls without straw or bedding, unable to turn around.

When PETA’s McDonald's billboard made headlines in Norfolk, Virginia, Z104 deejays Rocket and Teresa invited PETA reps to appear on the show. After we brought them veggie sausage, scrambled tofu and vegan biscuits, they invited us back every morning for two weeks!

From the Mailbag...

“My mother was upset by your graphic billboard. I told her that what McDonald’s does to animals is offensive and she should blame McDonald’s for doing it, not PETA for showing it!”

“Your new posters are horrifying, but I know they can’t in any way compare to the grotesque treatment endured by the 6 million feeling animals killed by McDonald’s.”

If these photos disgust you, don’t pay McDonald’s to carry out the horrifying suffering shown in them; instead, direct your beefs to the company responsible for the conditions you see here.

Look who’s taking on McDonald’s now!

Geoffrey Giuliano, the first Ronald McDonald, has had a change of heart about his old employer. “'Billions and billions served' means billions and billions slaughtered,” says Geoff. “I’m going to use the fact that I was Ronald McDonald as a big stick to beat these jerks over the head. I want to get the word out: This is animal genocide.” Of McDonald’s displeasure with the former Ronald’s statements, Geoff says, “Their worst fear was that they’d accidentally hire a child molester, but it was far worse: They hired a vegetarian.”
