"Would you ever dream of chaining up your best friend outside?" asks actor Justin Theroux in PETA's public service announcement (PSA) targeting the estimated millions of people who keep their dogs chained outside, often without protection from extreme weather or relief from unrelenting boredom and loneliness. The PSA, released for "Unchain a Dog" Month, spotlights the neglect and cruelty that "man's best friend" often endures at the end of a chain.
In the 30-second TV spot, Theroux, best known for his role on TV's Six Feet Under and in films including Charlie's Angels and Mulholland Drive, appears with his two canine companions, Lou Lou and Pooma.
Chaining dogs is prohibited in communities such as Little Rock, Arkansas; Fairhope, Alabama; and Big Spring, Texas. Find out how to end chaining in your community and get the message out by ordering a "Friends Don't Chain Friends" bumper sticker.
