Canada's Most Veg-Friendly Cities: #5 Toronto, Ontario
Toronto is the largest city in Canada-and it has a vegetarian bonanza as well. In just a few short years things have really come along in respect to veggie food selections. With nearly 20 vegetarian restaurants and dozens of organic and health food stores in the greater metro area, it's pretty easy to find vegetarian and vegan foods. Whether it's a fancy sit-down dinner or a quick veggie sub or falafel on the go, you will find something to suit every pallet in Toronto. Thanks to diverse Asian, East Indian, Middle Eastern, and Ethiopian communities, vegetarians and vegans can go out to eat every night of the week at a vegetarian restaurant that offers a different world cuisine. Toronto even hosted the World Vegetarian Congress in 2001.
Fressen, a trendy upscale vegan restaurant on Queen Street West, is just as popular with meat eaters as it is with vegetarians and vegans and Carrot Commons is a wonderful vegan/vegetarian all-in-one stop on the Danforth. Most Toronto grocery store chains, including Loblaws and Dominion, now offer animal friendly food items, cleaning products, and beauty items.
The Toronto Vegetarian Association (TVA) organizes a huge annual Vegetarian Food Fair; there have been 18 of them so far, and they're among the best in the world. The group publishes Lifelines Vegetarian Magazine and an annual Vegetarian Directory. They also have a helpful Web site at veg.ca.The TVA provides a discount card to members to receive up to a 20% discount at restaurants, health food stores, cooking classes, and more.
