Canada's Most Veg-Friendly Cities: #3 Winnipeg, Manitoba

Although one of Canada's coldest cities in the winter, Winnipeg is definitely a hot spot for vegetarians. With three fully vegetarian establishments, several organic natural food stores and one of the country's most active vegetarian groups, Winnipeg's got plenty to offer vegetarians and folks who just love good food. Winnipeg was ranked number three by Yves Veggie Cuisine for vegetarian product sales. How does Winnipeg do it?

Not far from Portage and Main, one of Canada's best-known intersections, is Mondragon Coffeehouse and Bookstore (91 Albert St). Completely vegan, often organic, with the city's widest selection of progressive books and magazines, Mondragon is one of Winnipeg's coolest gathering places. The restaurtant serves a wide range of ethnically diverse specials and mouth-watering desserts like double-layer chocolate cakes, tofu cream pies and delicious cookies. They also host book readings/signings, guest speakers and music. Delicious Vegetarian Restaurant (1467 Pembina Hwy) is a fully vegan Chinese restaurant with dozens of truly delicious dishes. The Hot and Sour Soup will warm you up and the Sweet & Sour Gluten Balls, Spicy Eggplant and Vegetarian Eight Treasures are customer favorites. Affinity Vegetarian Garden (208 Edmonton St.) across from the Winnipeg Convention Center in downtown Winnipeg opened in May 2002 and offers a pay-by-weight lunch buffet and a large selection of menu choices. Winnipeg also boasts an outstanding mix of vegetarian-friendly ethnic cuisine, including East Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, and Vietnamese restaurants.

Several natural food stores including Organza, Organic Planet, House of Nutrition and the chain of Vita Health stores offer organic produce as well as bulk and packaged foods. And the Winnipeg Vegetarian Association (www.ivu.org/wva) organizes a variety of events, including monthly restaurant dinners - be sure to check their website for event announcements and the guide to vegetarian places in town. Winnipeg is quickly becoming central Canada's bastion of compassion!
