Canada's Most Veg-Friendly Cities: #2 Victoria, British Columbia
Victoria, a vegan island paradise located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, rounds out the corner of the Northwest Veggie Triangle (Vancouver and Seattle, Wa). Canada's top maker of vegetarian foods, Yves Veggie Cuisine, reports that Victoria is the number one market for vegetarian food sales in all of North America.
Finding vegan food is an easy task in Victoria; it boasts two vegan restaurants, many vegetarian ones, and animal-friendly café's and health food stores. There are simply too many to mention in Victoria, however, Green Cuisine is easily one of the best vegan restaurants in the world. It's a self-serve buffet with mostly organic items, to-die-for desserts, and full ingredient listings for those who have allergies or are trying to avoid certain foods. The restaurant is perfect for a full meal or just sipping some organic tea or coffee. Another faux-meat favorite is The Lotus Pond, a vegan Buddhist restaurant with a wide range of mock meats and other traditional Buddhist vegetable dishes.
Victoria is also home of the Vancouver Island Vegetarian Association, which has monthly public vegan potlucks, an informative quarterly newsletter, and participates in a number of vegan-friendly events. Visit them online at IslandVeg.com for veggie info on the 'Garden' city.
There's no doubt Victoria has the highest per-capita vegetarian population of any city in Canada. Even corner stores stock soymilk and veggie alternatives and the main grocery stores are quite used to meeting vegetarian demands. With all the soy stimulating the libidos, it's no wonder they call this area the Wet Coast.
