Canada's Most Veg-Friendly Cities: #1 Vancouver, British Columbia
The word is that majestic Vancouver is Canada's most vegetarian-friendly city. Not coincidentally, it's also the country's healthiest, according to the National Post. This "wet coast" utopia offers twenty vegetarian restaurants and boasts the lowest rates of breast cancer, prostate cancer, and obesity in the country. Among the best and most interesting places to eat from the large selection of eats are The Naam, Greens and Gourmet, and Planet Veg, an out-of-this-world restaurant that brings vegetarian and fast food together. Even non-vegetarian restaurants in Vancouver seem more than willing to accommodate vegetarians with great-tasting meat alternatives.
Any mention of the Vancouver vegetarian scene would be incomplete without mentioning Bo Kong, a Buddhist restaurant with one location in Vancouver and another in nearby Richmond. Nearly all the food is vegan and diners consider rate it "out of this world." The selection seems almost endless. (See restaurant review in the latest edition of VHS' Animal Writes newsletter, posted on the VHS Web site.)
There are countless ethnic restaurants in this melting pot of a city that, while not all being vegetarian dish up great food for vegetarians and vegans. For instance, the popular Hon's downtown has two kitchens - one vegetarian and one for meat. Among the many favorites are the faux chicken and duck dishes. Another shining example is the Afghan Horseman, which offers a "vegan platter" to die for. Don't forget the plethora of Indian establishments where one could get lost for some time gorging on all the wonderful and tasty selections.
EarthSave Canada
has a dynamic annual "Taste of Health" vegetarian food
festival and monthly vegan potlucks, featuring discussions with
John Robbins, Vesanto Melina, and other well-known, influential
vegetarians and environementalists. EarthSave conducts vegan-friendly
restaurant tastings and reviews once a month and has a Toastmaster's
Club that teaches and encourages public speaking on veg issues.
Several smaller veg orientated organizations host social events,
information tables and other events, including Vegan
Voices, and SETA
at Simon Fraser University.
Vancouver also has several organic markets that hold food samplings, fairs, and "Health and Wellness Shows" several times a year. In addition, Vancouver has a number of health stores, wellness classes, vegetarian cooking classes, herbal dispensaries, public forums, and many neighborhood farmers markets.
With all this going on, is it any wonder why Vancouver is Canada's most veg-friendly city?
