Scene 1 (October 29, 2003)
Researcher: Koller
This tiny female mouse from cage 252444 was sickly as a result of
having been weaned too early in violation of policy.
Scene 2 (April 18, 2003)
Researcher: Weissman
This nude mouse in cage 218164 had been implanted with a large tumor
that was deeper in color than the rest of his skin, a sign of impending
ulceration.
Scene 3 (March 1, 2003)
Researcher: French
This nude mouse had been implanted with bilateral tumors, was castrated,
and underwent surgery to have a previously implanted testosterone
pellet removed from his hip. The incision in the mouse’s delicate
skin was not effectively sealed after surgery, leaving the animal
with an open wound.
Scene 4 (May 12, 2003)
Researcher: Koller
This mouse in cage 230407, who a veterinarian determined was unable
to urinate because his penis was missing, had been left to suffer
from swollen genitals without veterinary care for more than five months.
Scene 5 (May 20, 2003)
Researcher: Morrow
A research technician violates federal regulations by decapitating
two fully conscious rats using a guillotine with a blade so dull that
the animals’ necks have to be chopped more than once before
their heads are severed. (Listen carefully to hear the guillotine’s
lever being forcefully pulled down onto the animals’ necks twice.)
Scene 6 (April 15, 2003)
Researcher: Koller
A graduate student violates federal regulations by cutting off sections
of the tails of unanesthetized mice with cosmetic scissors, while
at the same time amputating the animals’ toes for identification
purposes.
Scene 7 (April 21, 2003)
PETA’s investigator informs her supervisor that she has witnessed
a member of Koller’s lab violating policy by amputating animals’
toes for identification purposes. The supervisor coerces the investigator
to change her verbal report to him, “Stick to the script …
I just can’t be hearing this—you know that, right?”
He then grows agitated and insists, “Don’t worry about
that crap. Trust me. It’s more political BS than you want to
get your hands into.”
Scene 8 (October 31, 2003)
Researcher: Koller
Referring to the tendency of one researcher who has received large
grants to break rules and get away with it, a research technician
declares, “Bev[erly Koller] is slick … she has ways of
working the system.”
