Turn off Survivor, and go see Chicken Run

When you see a movie that features animals, you normally see a disclaimer in the credits assuring you that no animals were harmed in the making of the film. Unfortunately, you won’t see any such disclaimers in the credits for Survivor.

If you thought killing animals for entertainment went out with the gladiators, you’re in for a rude awakening, courtesy of the CBS game show Survivor, where torturing animals for titillation is alive and kicking (unlike the animals who are unfortunate enough to encounter the Survivor crew).

From rats to chickens—they’re all dead meat on Survivor

First it was rats, then rays, then three chickens were delivered to Survivor contestants as a "reward." To CBS, these birds were nothing more than a gimmick to boost ratings. To the contestants, they were nothing more than "breakfast, lunch and dinner."

But chickens are more than walking entrées. Although they may not be as "cute" as dogs and cats, these gentle birds suffer every bit as much as our cherished companions. Chickens are among the most mistreated animals on the planet, killed by the billions every year in the U.S. alone. Those who’ve kept chickens as companions know that they are affectionate, social animals who like to take dust baths, eat grapes, and even cuddle in your lap like a kitten.

They say chickens are stupid …

… but CBS execs are starting to look like the real "bird brains." Encouraging viewers of Survivor to cheer on the slaughter of birds and other animals is cruel and unnecessary and sends a dangerous message to the millions of impressionable kids who are watching.

Should CBS be allowed to torture and kill animals for ratings?

Because of the overwhelming number of calls and e-mails that PETA has received protesting the treatment of animals on the show, we are conducting a poll to save the chickens.

After voting in the poll (the results of which we will give to CBS), please write a polite letter to:

**Note: PETA is aware that the fate of the chickens has already been decided. It is crucial, however, that CBS’s Les Moonves hear from concerned people so that he doesn’t promote animal cruelty in upcoming episodes.

These chickens can’t run

Before ending up on someone’s plate, factory-farmed baby chicks have their beaks seared off and are stuffed into sheds with tens of thousands of other birds. Many get sick and die. After being fattened up, they are thrown into tiny crates and trucked to the slaughterhouse. When it’s really hot or cold outside, many don’t survive the trip. The ones who do are hung upside down by their feet and killed. Chickens have absolutely no protection under federal law—many have their throats slit and are dunked into tanks of scalding water while fully conscious.

Before shoving chickens and eggs down the throats of Survivor participants, CBS should have considered that although "tribe" members may survive the show, they could die of salmonella poisoning. Eating chicken is no more healthful or humane than eating other kinds of meat, and neither are eggs. These foods are hazardous to our health, and there are many good substitutes for them. We can eat "tofu scrambler" instead of scrambled eggs, use egg replacer in baked goods, and fry nonmeat "Chickette" instead of a battered bird breasts. Any of these or a variety of other vegetarian foods could have been delivered to hungry Survivors instead of living, suffering beings.

Proposed PETA regulation:

Because animals should never be tortured or killed for entertainment purposes, all Survivor participants are prohibited from killing any animal and are expected to live off the area vegetation or food provided by CBS.
