PETA's 5th Annual Proggy Awards

PETA's panel of judges has cast their votes for the fifth annual Proggy Awards, which recognize animal-friendly achievement in 21st century culture and commerce. The winners have helped people discover, access, and explore delicious vegan food options, trendy animal-friendly fashion, and outstanding cruelty-free beauty products and household products. Others—ranging from celebrity chefs to religious leaders—have helped raise awareness by promoting respect and empathy for animals.

This year's Proggy Award winners have gone above and beyond in PETA's eyes. By educating consumers about animal rights issues—and providing them with resources to help animals as well as alternatives to processes that hurt animals—recipients of the Proggy Awards are contributing to a more humane life for our entire society. Help us give a round of applause to the following Proggy Award winners for their initiative, creativity, passion, and desire to make a difference.

Company of the Year

Garden Protein International

Garden Protein

Self-described "chickenless chicken farmer" Yves Potvin used to run a small factory on Vancouver's Eastside, where he learned about German sausage making, Chinese tofu production, and sausage stuffing techniques. Potvin mastered tofu dogs and dozens of other vegan faux meats before eventually selling his company, Yves Veggie Cuisine, to Celestial Foods Group.

Gardein

Now, Potvin is back with a new company, Garden Protein International; a new product line, It's All Good; and a new product, Gardein—faux chicken and beef made from soy, wheat, and carrot fiber, which is marinated and then slow-cooked. Packaged in marinades—like Tuscan tomato, herb Dijon, zesty lemon, and Mediterranean herb—Gardein is packed with texture and taste.
