Mercedes Victory

In January 2005, Mercedes-Benz informed PETA that all future Mercedes-Benz models will be available with a completely leather-free option, either direct at the dealership or via special order in all markets.

The announcement follows PETA’s consumer-driven campaign to pressure Mercedes-Benz to offer alternatives to leather for all models of its cars. The campaign scored a stunning first victory in 2003 when DaimlerChrysler-India agreed to make a nonleather interior an option in all Mercedes models built and sold in that country. Actor James Cromwell (whose credits include The Sum of All Fears, The Green Mile, The General’s Daughter, and Babe, for which he received an Academy Award nomination) had asked the company for a face-to-face meeting, and there were protests, including activists who chained themselves to Mercedes cars at auto shows and billboard ads. In 2002, the owner of a Texas shopping center ripped the leather interior out of her brand-new Mercedes and replaced it with luxurious look-alike pleather upholstery. An activist dressed as a cow returned the discarded skins to Mercedes-Benz.

On behalf of caring consumers worldwide, PETA thanks Mercedes-Benz and continues to encourage DaimlerChrysler, maker of the Mercedes-Benz brand, to do the same for its other brands.
