Campaign Highlights

PETA cow delivering seats to DaimlerChryslerFebruary 2005—PETA nominates MG Rover Group for its annual Litterbox Award for the company’s “Leather as Standard” ad campaign. At a time when other car companies are learning that offering leather-free options is environmentally and ethically responsible, MG Rover Group plans to offer all 2005 Rover 25 and Rover 45 models with leather upholstery as part of the standard package. Every year, PETA gives Litterbox Awards to companies that advertise in ways that are disrespectful toward animals. PETA also gives Glitterbox Awards to businesses with advertisements that depict animals in a positive manner. The winners of both categories are featured in PETA’s quarterly magazine Animal Times.

January 2005—Mercedes-Benz informs PETA that all future Mercedes-Benz models will be available with a completely leather-free option, either direct at the dealership or via special order in all markets. PETA continues to encourage DaimlerChrysler, maker of the Mercedes-Benz brand, to do the same for its other brands.

December 2004—PETA rewards Toyota with a Breakthrough PETA Proggy Award (for companies that are making progress in protecting animals’ rights).

The recipient of the 2004 North American Car of the Year Award also happens to be super animal-friendly! Achieving coveted positions in the “best” lists of Car and Driver magazine, Fortune, and Business Week, the Toyota Prius has wowed consumers and critics alike with its amazing fuel economy and contoured aerodynamic design. PETA is impressed by Toyota’s decision not to offer the Prius with leather—no cow skin cramping your cruelty-free eco-style! Says Paul Daverio, manager for advanced technology vehicle marketing at Toyota, “Prius does represent social responsibility to the environment for many people. . . . And we understand that there are some issues with leather.”

December 2004—PETA thanks Saab for stating that consumers may order any Saab model with a completely leather-free interior and that Saab is actively working to minimize the amount of leather in its cars and urges General Motors, maker of Saab brand, to do the same for its other brands.
