Update! After learning from PETA and the Sled Dog Action Coalition about the cruelty inherent to the Iditarod, Spectrum Brands, Inc., has instituted a companywide policy, effective next year, against sponsoring the race. Please thank Spectrum Brands for its compassionate decision:

Fortunately, more and more corporations
are discovering the truth behind the Iditarod spectacle
and are withdrawing their support. Please
contact the 2006 Iditarod sponsors immediately to
ask that they follow the progressive example of companies
like Nestlé, Rite Aid, Irridium World Communications,
Safeway, Maxwell House, True Value Hardware, BP Amoco,
Sherwin-Williams, Upjohn, Tropicana, Pizza Hut, Costco,
and Pfizer Pharmacia by canceling their sponsorship
of the Iditarod.
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper
to educate people about the suffering endured by the
dogs who are forced to participate in this spectacle.
If your area schools follow the progress of the Iditarod
participants as a part of their curricula, contact principals
and the school board to educate them about the reality
of this cruel event. Ask them to incorporate Share
the World, a program that teaches children respect
and compassion for animals instead. You can find more
information and request copies of the packet at ShareTheWorld.com.
