Would you drink milk from a dog? How about a giraffe? Weird!
So why drink milk from a cow? Dog milk is designed for puppies, giraffe milk is designed for baby giraffes, and cow’s milk is designed for—yes—baby cows!

Cows produce milk for the same reason humans do—to feed their babies. And like humans, cows must get pregnant in order to give milk. Their calves are taken away from them a day or two after birth so their milk can feed humans instead. Female dairy calves are slaughtered or raised to be future dairy cows. Male dairy calves are chained inside cramped, dark crates to be killed for veal.

Doctors and nutritionists now recommend that we stop drinking milk altogether because it’s been linked to heart disease, allergies, some cancers, and even osteoporosis, the bone-weakening disease that we used to think it would prevent.

In some kids, drinking milk may cause ear infections, asthma, intestinal bleeding, and juvenile diabetes, a disease that can cause blindness.

The good news is that we can get all the calcium we need from the plant world—tofu, broccoli, beans, grains, and calcium-fortified orange juice are all good sources.

A cow’s normal life expectancy is 20 to 25 years, but dairy cows are so worn out that they’re killed after just four years.

Dr. Spock Says Ditch Dairy

Pop quiz: What does America’s favorite baby doc, the late Benjamin Spock, recommend in his world-famous book, Baby and Child Care? A vegan diet for kids!

Says Dr. Spock, “Children who grow up [eating] plant foods rather than meats have a tremendous health advantage. They are less likely to develop weight problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, and ... cancer ... I no longer recommend dairy products.”

Mom and Dad pushing the moo juice? Show them this quote from the American Dietetic Association: “Well-planned vegan diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, ... satisfying nutrient needs of infants, children, and adolescents and promoting normal growth.”

Instead of …
Butter
Sauté in water or vegetable broth, use lemon juice for dressing, or switch to vegetable margarines and oils.
Ice Cream
Try frozen desserts like Soy Delicious, Tofutti, Rice Dream, fruit sorbets, and ices. You'll never want to go back to the cholesterol and saturated fat of ice cream.
Milk
Try chocolate, vanilla, almond, and plain soy milk. Excellent for cooking, on cereal, in coffee and hot chocolate–use it any way you'd use milk. Comes in low-fat varieties, too.
Cheese
Check health food stores for soy cheese, which is great on pizza and sandwiches, or in sauces. You can also make a great, creamy "cheese" sauce using nutritional yeast flakes.

Leonardo da Vinci was a vegetarian. Will Leonardo DiCaprio follow in his namesake’s footsteps?

When the world was getting ready to mark 30 years of “Earth Days” last spring, PETA dropped a line to Titanic heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio, the chairperson of one of the biggest Earth Day celebrations of all, in Washington, D.C. We asked Leo to use his influence (or even just his baby blues) to convince the event’s organizers to serve only vegetarian food.

Bite BackThere are lots of reasons to promote vegetarianism on Earth Day. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, factory farms pollute waterways more than all other industrial sources combined! In fact, every year, U.S. factory farms produce 1.4 billion tons of animal waste. That’s 130 times more waste than the country’s entire human population produces—and it is never treated by sewage systems like the ones in cities and towns.

The animal waste generated in a single year on factory farms could fill 6.7 million train boxcars—enough to encircle the Earth 12.5 times.

Illustration by Monica GesueNot long after Leo got our letter explaining why vegetarianism is the healthiest diet for the planet, he told Time magazine: “I shouldn’t be eating hamburgers, because the methane gas that cows release is the number one contributor to the destruction of the ozone layer; and the number one reason they destroy the rain forest is to make grazing ground for cattle.”

Fortunately, the D.C. “E.D.” turned out to be meat-free. Earth Day celebrations in New York and Los Angeles also served only yummy, Earth-friendly veggie treats after hearing from PETA.

Find out more about how raising animals for food hurts the Earth by visiting www.GoVeg.com.

One factory farm in Utah produces more animal waste in one year than the amount of human waste the entire city of Los Angeles generates during those same 12 months.

Bite BackHelp us convince Leo to say bye-bye to burgers by explaining to him how meat-eating hurts animals, the Earth, and our health. Tell him how yummy veggie burgers are; send him your favorite meat-free recipes; invite him over for a veggie dinner!
