GREENWASH–to mislead, cover up, or gloss over damaging facts by appealing to environmental values

Report Card > Environmental Working Group

Grade: c

PETA wrote to the Environmental Working Group because of its involvement in chemical-testing issues and its past calls for increased testing on animals. We invited the organization to endorse a statement:

• calling on EPA to increase its funding and use of non-animal test methods; and

• endorsing the use of only those new test methods that have been rigorously assessed by the Interagency Coordinating Committee for the Validation of Alternative Methods and found to be scientifically valid.

The Environmental Working Group has not endorsed PETA’s statement. However, high-ranking officials in the organization have met with PETA representatives to discuss this matter and have since committed to reconsider the Environmental Working Group’s position on animal-testing.
