After months of hard work by thousands of dedicated activists, Election Day brought about some hard-earned victories for animals! A huge Congratulations! goes out to all of you who wrote letters, sent e-mail messages, spent hours, days, and months collecting signatures, talked to people about these initiatives, and voted at the polls in behalf of the animals on Tuesday. Your tireless efforts achieved a long-overdue breakthrough for the animals!
Pig Gestation Crates Banned in Florida!
This unprecedented landmark passage of the first farmed-animal initiative will ban the use of cruel sow gestation crates, those barren metal enclosures in which pregnant pigs are confined, unable even to turn around for most of their lives. News reports show that 55 percent of Florida voters wanted the crates outlawed.
Corporate hog factories also produce massive amounts of animal waste, which pollutes the environment and contaminates the water. This banning of gestation crates will prevent mega hog factories from being established in Florida and wreaking environmental havoc. Thank you for protecting pregnant pigs and the environment!
Cockfighting Banned in Oklahoma!
Cockfighters in Oklahoma wont get away with cruel fighting anymore. According to the Shawnee News-Star (Oklahoma Bans Cockfighting, Nov. 6), voters approved a ban on cockfighting 55 percent to 45 percent, making cockfighting a felony, punishable by 10 years in prison. Cockfighters breed birds for aggression, feed them a steady diet of stimulants, strap razor-sharp knives or ice-pick-like gaffs to their legs, and place them in a pit to hack each other to deathall for amusement. Cockfighting is still legal in only two other states. Look out, Louisiana and New Mexicoyoure next!
More Victories!
Oklahoma: Voters also defeated a corrupt, outrageous anti-animal protection measure introduced by animal exploiters who are worried that their profitable exploitation of animals is threatened by the publics demand for better treatment of animals. It would have required proposed animal protection measures to receive twice the number of supporting signatures as other proposed measures. Arizona: Voters rejected a proposition that would have expanded greyhound-racing tracks and made them more profitable for the greyhound-racing industry. For more information about cruelty in the greyhound industry, click here.
Georgia: An amendment to create a special spay/neuter license plate was approved. Funds from the sales of these license plates will go to low-cost spay/neuter programs. To learn more about how you can promote spaying and neutering in your state, click here.
