World’s First Fur-Free City?

Written by PETA | May 19, 2011

Which premier luxury shopping destination is poised to ban fur? That would be West Hollywood, California, home of the famous Sunset Strip. As part of West Hollywood’s quest to establish itself as the “Humane Capitol of the Nation,” the City Council has directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance prohibiting the sale of fur products. Since the council members voted unanimously in favor of drafting the ordinance, chances are good that it will pass with flying colors.

The fur-free ordinance continues a long West Hollywood tradition of kindness to animals. It was the first city in the country to ban cat declawing and also banned the retail sale of dogs and cats in pet stores, as well as pushing for Proposition 2, which improved welfare standards for “laying hens” in California.

Not lucky enough to live in West Hollywood? You can help shoo fur out of your town by organizing protests outside fur salons and other stores that sell fur. See PETA’s “Guide to Becoming an Activist” for tips.

Someday, I hope we could do this all over the US and well, the whole world. Animals have lives just like us, what if this happened to us? How would we feel? It’s just horrible. Stop the Violence! Go West Hollywood! :)

  • Tania says:

Fantastic news! I hope some of those celebs who have no moral compass and wear fur, take note of this. J Lo for example. She cries over some contestant being booted off American Idol, but does she cry about the animals being skinned for their fur? I doubt it. Something very wrong there…

Many years ago my parents bought me a beaver coat because going to college in north-west New York was a very very cold experience. Never NEVER again. Cold or no cold. The cruelty involved is abhorrent. I hope many others will come to recognize what took me a long time to come to see. One question though….I see a lot of fashion shows, more an more so it seems, that show either fur or what may be fake fur. How can that be stopped?

  • lbk says:

I see a lot of graphic pictures of suffering animals but this one really saddens me today. Seeing a confused, wild animal locked in a cage is heartbreaking. Knowing how she suffered to be someone’s coat is even more so. Fur is for the truly heartless.

I am convinced that when people learn the truth about the fur trade, factory farming and animal experimentation most of them will support humane solutions. Congratulations to PETA and to the Humane Society for keeping up the exposure. This is the only way for us to make a better world. Congratulations to West Hollywood too.
