‘Win It’ Wednesday: The First Dog’s Gift Basket

Written by PETA | December 15, 2010

In the spirit of the holiday season, PETA is sending a gift basket full of treats and toys to the Obamas’ “son,” Bo, as a reminder to his human family that millions of dogs who are every bit as deserving of presidential perks as the first dog suffer cruelty and neglect. This gift basket, which is full of the kinds of goodies that dogs’ daydreams are made of, also happens to be the prize for this week’s “Win It” Wednesday contest.

Want to win it? Of course you do. Tell us what animal protection measure you’d immediately sign into law if you became president. The first thing that pops into my head? I’d pass a law requiring that all dogs be allowed inside—no more shivering 24/7 on chains or in filthy backyard pens. Give it some thought and then wow us. The person who comes up with the “law” we think would deliver the biggest punch in the fight for animal protection will score the prize.

The contest ends on December 28, 2010, and the winner will be chosen on December 30, 2010. Be sure to read our privacy policy and terms and conditions, as you’re agreeing to both by commenting.

No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law.

Good luck!

My law would be any sexual abuse of an animal would be treated as someone that had sexually abused a child. They would have the same type of punishment, have to register as a sex offender etc.

  • Valerie says:

I’d pass a law that all pet owners must pass a test before owning a one, like adopting a child!

  • andee506 says:

I would sign into law that anyone convicted of any kind of animal abuse would have to work with homeless, abused animals a minimum of 5 hours a week for 1 year.Longer for more severe cases.

  • amanda says:

My law would be if ayone is caught abusing animals in anyway leaving them outside when its cold obviously physically and abandoning them they should get automatic prison time and solitary confinement would e bsuch a bad choice and also anyone that knows abuse is going on and doesnt report should be in trouble too! There is no reason for it if you cant handle an animal dont have one find a home there are plenty of options!

  • channallocks says:

    NO more kill shelters

  • Justine417 says:

I would make it a law that there would be no more ‘kill’ animal shelters 🙁

  • Noelle says:

Any animal cruelty would be punishable by law and sentences to be served in the fullest!

  • dpschad says:

If I were elected President, I would make it a law that anyone having a pet would be required to love and provide for their pet as they would a child. Pets are not just animals. They are living, breathing creatures that supply a lot of love and companionship to their owners and should get the same in return.

  • Lisa Taylor says:

I would make a law that dogfighters be given the maximum sentence and never be allowed to ever own or be around any animal again

  • Teegan Briggs says:

I would pass a law that you must register for a permit/license to own a dog. In order to get this permit, you must pass a home inspection and some type of animal care quiz. You must also prove that you have the means to care for the pet. I’ve adopted a dog from a rescue recently, and I was put through a process very similar to what I’ve outline above. I think that ANYBODY who is about to own a pet through any avenue (not just adopting through rescue) must pass a similar screening.

  • hazel hunt says:

    My babies would love this!!

  • Deb K says:

I would pass a law that no dogs or any animals would be locked in cars in the burning summer heat. And if anyone does leave them in the car while they are shopping or doing any other activities, will be prosocuted to the FULL extent of the law. No ifs and or Buts!

  • AriGriffin says:

Frankly I feel that spaying/neutering all companion animals is a stupid idea. That would mean there would not be anymore animals after the fixed ones die. Also, I have teathered my dogs outside. They would dig out of the fence and even an electric fence didn’t phase them. The longest they were outside was ten hours, but they had water, shelter, and food. I would make the punishments more severe for animal abusers. I would also require every companion animal to be microchipped and the owner to take a class on how to care for and train the animal.

  • Erica C. says:

There should be a law where you have to show proof that your pet has seen a vet at least once a year.

  • Sue C says:

My first law would be to restrict puppy mills to a mximum number of breeding dogs (say 10 or less),they must all be licensed – all proceeds from the license fee to go to the individual states’ SPCA group, subject to random inspection ,with a minumum space allowance per dog & regular veternary checks which must all be recorded. This information needs to be posted outsuide of their premises so that prospective dog owners could tell if the breeder was reputable.

  • Tesa S. says:

I’d pass a law making it illegal to chain animals, deny them shelter, food & water. The punishment would be to suffer the same fate as the animal did! So if your dog is on a thick, heavy chain, you would have one around your neck, only longer and heavier than on your dog, and you’d have to drag it around all day, or sit in the sun all day without shelter, or go without food or water. That’ll teach them!!!

  • Candie L says:

I would limit the amount of animals a person could own. There is no reason for anyone to own more than 3 or 4 pets. Thank you

  • Nancy Meyer says:

I would make a law that if you mistreat an animal, you are treated an convicted in the same manner as if you’d harmed a human.

  • tapango1 says:

i’d pass a law that dogs were allowed in restaurnats but not smokers!!

  • Stitch says:

I would make it forbidden to sell “bowls” to put gold-fish in it! This is torture!!

  • JAMES P LYNAM says:

Any charge of animal cruelty should be considered serious.

  • Nathan Faulhaber says:

Tell the FDA to allow pharmaceuticals to go to market without animal testing, as long as the product packaging displays a label saying so.

  • Nicole Licklider says:

So, so, so many ideas come to mind!!! But the FIRST law (followed by a cascade of others) law I would pass would be to outlaw the breeding of animals!!!

  • demmi says:

I would pass a law that if you have to register your dog or cat and it is not sprayed/neutered you would pay a yearly fee that would be used to help homeless pets

  • charlie says:

It would be require by law along with their sex ed course that student have to take an animal ethic course where they would be taugth how to treat animals humanely

  • Queen Boni says:

My law would be to make any form of animal cruelty absolutely illegal.. and whoever breaks this law would be punish by doing what the person did to the animal to the person who break the law ..( it would be an eye for an eye)

  • Chris says:

I would make a law that requires jail time for those found guilty of animal cruelty charges, and I would also make it illegal for them to ever own or live with animals of any kind again. Oh, and have a national animal cruelty list ala the sex offender registry.

  • Saucy says:

Exuse me, Did you say “Win it Wednesday”. Holy Tofu Dog. We got three. Who just can’t seem to get enough special treatments, perks and treats. They’re always waggin for more. So what if they have behavior issues. They’re still doggies. THEY GOT RIGHTS, and that’s THE LAW. The law that I would like to see passed besides the Federal Ban on Cruel and Inhumane Factory Farming Practices like Pig Gestation Crates, Veal Crates, and Battery Cages, would be the ACCOUNTABILITY FOR EVERY ANIMAL USED IN A LIVE EXPERIMENT, EVERY ANIMAL COMING OUT OF A BREEDING FACILITY LIKE THOSE IN THE EVERGLADES, would not only be given a name and burial, but broadcast on television what happened to them. Reality TV if you will. Show the taxpayers where there money is going. Now that’s tax reform!!!!!!!

  • Tom says:

I would put into law that animals are allowed in stores/restuarants.

  • paige chandler says:

I’d pass a law that all dogs need to be kissed and loved on daily.

  • Brennan says:

I would make a law so that all animal breeding and fighting would be illgal and so pet stores couldnt sell the actual pets. I would also give no-kill shelters extra money to care for the animals so they could have lower adoption prices

  • Lauren Holt says:

My first law would be to ban factory farms! Along with many, many others! My dog would love this basket, I only spent a little money on him this year, as I’m below minimum wage, and spent all my money on food for the shelter… He’s only getting a few bones until I next get paid, and I feel really bad!

  • crystle tellerday says:

    thank you for helping animals

  • Veggie_Chick221 says:

I have always hated the fact that if somebody broke into your house to rob and/or harm you and you hit him with a weapon, it would be okay because it was self-defense. However, if your dog does the same thing to protect you and his/her territory, the robber can sue and the dog would be killed. If I were elected president, my first law that I would pass would be the Animals Equal Rights Act. In this law it would be completely legal for a dog to attack an intruder in order to protect his/her family and territory. The intruder would have no rights to bring the case to court.

  • sdg45 says:

I would make a law that would require dog owners to pass a test…LOL Right? Are you capable of caring for a dog? How do feel about dogs being indoors? Would you ever chain up a dog while you are gone? How much time could devote to your dog? I think more than that I would pass a law requiring all adopted animals to be spayed or neutered.

  • Becka says:

I would pass a bill prohibiting the abuse, mistreatment, and murder of any sentient being.

  • Julie says:

I would outlaw animal testing of all cosmetics as well as requiring humane methods used in medical research where other options not available. I would also require that alternate methods be developed and animal research banned.
