Virginia Bear Hunt Goes Awry

Written by PETA | December 6, 2006

Against the wishes of a number of concerned residents—and probably quite a few bears—a federal judge allowed a bear hunt to go forward this week in a wildlife preserve in Hampton Roads, Virginia, near where PETA is based. Hunters from all over the area converged on Monday to violently kill bears in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. As it turns out, bears are better at surviving in swamps than jackasses, and not a single animal was shot, according to yesterday’s Virginian Pilot, though one hunter did get lost within 50 yards of a road and had to call 911. A fleeting victory, perhaps, but a victory nonetheless. Nice work, bears.

I say that we start hunting the hunter what do you say? I mean why the fuck would you kill a bear for food. Just go to the damn grocery store. We all know that these idiots kill for fun.

If you only want to eat plants it’s your CHOICE. I prefer to harvest process cook and eat wild game it’s my CHOICE.I also raise a garden and eat my veggies too. My protein comes from the renewable resources that God provided. The real threat to wildlife is loss of habitat and the hunters are the ones funding the preservation of habitat. Take a look at national population numbers of whitetail deer elk turkey and why there numbers have escalated. Game management practices today are sound. I have a 9 mile country drive to work and in a short stretch in the past couple weeks 3 deer lay dead along the highway. This is a case of an anti hunting land owner. Hey way to go hope they feel better knowing auto’s killed those deer instead of someone who would utilize the venison to feed there family. Let’s hope the rest of them don’t die a slow death from starvation this winter. We have an over population of deer in my State and harsh winters. Harvesting deer is essential for the health of the deer and habitat as a whole. PETA to me is no different than the extremist minorities who want the Pledge of Allegiance and religion out of our schools. I wonder what you do if your home is infested with insects catchandrelease sterilization contraceptive laced food? Or how about when your pet is old and dieing let nature take it’s course? Nimrod

A response for Ajhil’s comment posted on 14th feb 2007. Could you please provide reference for this statement “Deer rabbits and other species respond to high population and low food supplies by reducing their reproductive rates through fetal reabsorption and other mechanisms.” I would be grateful if you do. I am researching this subject. Thanks.

Many valid points by most people critics of hunting though please check data on things such as deer overpopulation despite hunting in 13 eastern states. Also I share the view that humans are the biggest threat to the planet. But if so then where are the efforts being made to reducestabilize the earth’s human population? Ide also like to know the type of fuel you use in your vehicles. Is it vegetable oil based or petroleum? One cannot be totally against the use of animal byproducts if that person uses petro products for as anyone who can remember their grade school science teachings crude oil is the result of decayed life forms now extinct. Thank you.

Hunting is a sport and you people do need to get lives bob smith is right if the animals would die slower and with a lot more pain from starvation and disease and we were given animals to hunt and eat during creation

  • ajhil says:

Their self serving views notwithstanding hunters have only one credible motivation for hunting they like to kill things preferably with minimal effort and no risk to themselves. As for “saving” wildlife from starvation and other consequences of overpopulation through hunting this is a palpable fiction. Deer rabbits and other species respond to high population and low food supplies by reducing their reproductive rates through fetal reabsorption and other mechanisms. Normally this occurs before populations reach extreme levels that is unless “game managers” in league with hunting interests intervene to maintain unnatural birth rates. Even if this weren’t true there are more humane ways to reduce wild animal populations short of hunting such as contraceptive laced food drops salt licks or catchandrelease sterilization. It’s pathetic when a group of people justifies blatant sadism by appealing to our species’ most primitive impulses. Hunting is a cruel and atavistic practice that should be abandoned by every civilized culture.

To Madhunter I hardly think that shooting a bear for fun could be called “killing for survival” after all the last time I checked the grocery store there was plenty of beef fish chicken pork and many more dead animals to be bought for “survival”.

Oh geez I read the blog again and now I have another comment sorry…. Man was given dominion over animals and started eating animals AFTER falling from grace in the Garden of Eden. Dominion does not mean we get to abuse or take advantage of or to do whatever we want like some tyrannt we have dominion over our children our homes etc. but dominion comes with responsibility to protect and care for. Animals were given to us by God for our joy and for companionship. Do you think we will eat animals in Heaven when the lion is laying with the lamb? Michelle Lilly

  • Michelle Lilly says:

Hunting is not a sport a sport involves two teams that both know the rules and what is going on in order to try to win hunting is one sided which is not sport. And in sports the loser does not die. I agree with the comment above that humans are the biggest example of overpopulation. Animals become extint all the time because of man hunting killing and taking away their environment. Also I was just at the “Museum of Man” in San Diego and man has never had the teeth and digestive system of a carnivore so I personally do not buy what you are selling “we have to eat animals to survive”. I don’t eat animals and I am waaayyyy healthy and surviving just fine. Go check out the museum for yourself and look at the teeth and skull of man when he was the size of a monkey up until today man has not changed really that much except that we got taller. Argh just had to get that all off my chest.

“arrogance of Hunters thinking they are doing God’s will” Why do you think God put animals on this earth ….to look at? think about it do some reading.

  • becca says:

yea in a perfect world you would be right but it isnt so get over it. if we so called heartless killers didnt hunt people would see the drastic effects disease killing everythinga ton of car wrecks not to mention animals suffering from starvation now tell us were idiots. Although you may not see it this way we are saving lives. Oh yea i dont remember history class teaching about how people years ago wouldnt kill an animal for food. The idea that animals are not to be used for food is unknown to me its crazy Great example Jesus was not a vegetarian so think about what you are up against really. Read the first few pages of the Bible geez…

Hey Guys I think it is Bob Smith that you should be venting your anger at not Paul the names are underneath. Bob you talk out of your arse and it doesn’t matter what you say to yourself to justify hunting it is still murdering an innocent creature for no reason or just to make yourself feel manly with you BIG gun!!! I think it is you that needs to get a life.

  • monica says:

HUNTING IS NOT A SPORT!!!! How many times do we have to tell you idiots this? That is like saying domestic abuse is a game. “Starvation and disease are unfortunate but they are nature’s way of ensuring that the strong survive. Natural predators help keep prey species strong by killing the only ones they can catchthe sick and weak. Hunters however kill any animal they come across or any animal whose head they think would look good mounted above the fireplaceoften the large healthy animals needed to keep the population strong.”askcarla.com

  • That Paul is an Idiot says:

Paul have you read “The Most Dangerous Game”? I hope you become the hunted one day just to see how fun a sport hunting is.

  • paul says:

Dan… I think that the animals that cohabit on Earth are more smarterresourceful than people give credit for. All animals develop a balance within their surrounding environment which I believe is a law of nature. Man for too long has tried to control natural orderselection which has now lead to the endangerment and extinction of many different species. Unfortunately We live in a VERY DARK AGE!! where the last thing we will end up killing is ourselves unless people begin to reflect. If man was meant to carry on the work of GOD through Then at the moment all I’ve seen is the Devil’s.

  • Dan says:

Paul… wow. I wonder how all those poor animals in the wilderness survive without human intervention to keep their numbers in check.

  • Ryan says:

Nobody in VA Beach hunts for survival. They hunt because it makes them feel less uncomfortable about their microscopically small penises.

  • pcb says:

I think Life and nature will create it’s own energy to look after and maintain a level of balance. I still not surprised by arrogance of Hunters thinking they are doing God’s will. It is not for them to decide what should live and what should die. To respect all life is not stupid It’s SACRED!! The only species that is over populated is MAN!!

  • bob smith says:

i think u people need to get a life…hunting is a sport if people didnt hunt the animal population would be to high and the animals would die of starvation so calm down

  • Paul says:

In response to a comment. I never met a hunter that kills animals for survival I think nowadays it is more for sportcustom. You can’t compare the early stages of man where it was necessary to kill animals to where we are now!!. I think people kill animals when it’s not necessary and with out any regard for life see the world halfblinded. The fact that the bear hunt went wrong is proof that hunters and that judge have their brains up their ARSE!! As I said before people only kill through their own IGNORANCE and CRUELTY!!! I should know my dad use to hunt not anymore

  • MAD HUNTER says:

what does peta think about the rights of humans they dont seem to remember that their forefathars had to hunt to keep their families alive and if they hadnt the people who run PETA wouldnt be here so they can thank the people who have the guts to go out and kill for suvival for their lives.
