Victory: Lufthansa Stops Shipping Dogs and Cats to Laboratories

Written by PETA | April 15, 2010

Wow, that was fast! Less than a day after PETA released heartbreaking photos and posted an action alert on our Web site drawing attention to the plight of more than 50 dogs who were transported on a Lufthansa cargo plane from the U.S. to a notorious Charles River Laboratories animal testing facility in Scotland, Lufthansa has announced a new policy prohibiting the transport of dogs and cats to laboratories. To everyone who responded to our call to action, thank you!

It’s a great first step and an important victory for cats and dogs. We’re delighted that Lufthansa acted so speedily. But all animals suffer in laboratories, so PETA is currently in discussions with Lufthansa concerning additional measures that can be taken to protect animals of other species.

  • Gilda Batista says:

By stopping cruel treatment such as bad conditions of transportation Lufthansa is doing a great deal to those beings. May this action gets extended to other animals that suffer from abuse.

  • DIANA says:

its great that this airlines banned the transport of cats and dogs but what about all the other animals who will still be shipped is there pain and death less worth? this is the year 2010 when will the killing end! shut those labs down at all cost! if there is a law that allows this then change it and if the law is being broken then who will get off there butt’s and make the legal system accountable? i say if you know of a lab in your own state take action shut it down at all cost!

Very good news! Now we just need to shut down the breeders of these poor dogs and the sale to the laboratories! I hope all the other airlines follow in Luftansa’s footsteps!

  • Bonnie says:

Great news but PETA is right to force the issue and seek the ban of any and all animals destined for experimentation.

  • Cecille says:

Yeiiiiii felicidades Peta!!! Han escuchado lo que pasa en Mxico con respecto a los perros?

  • Carlos A. Leon-Bocanegra Jr. says:

Congratulations to the hard work by PETA and to all those involved in the notification process to Luftansa. Excellent victory! However thank you to Luftansa for acting with such speed to realize the seriousness of this action this shows the professionism of the company.

  • CAROLINE says:

That’s great news but who will be monitoring this to see if that is really so. Most businesses say one thing and do another. There should be no animal labs people seriously! And if you think there should then send your kids!

  • Jorge Vázquez Louza says:

    Long live Luftansa!!!

  • Jess says:

Great! Thanks for those who signed the document as I did… thanks a lot PETA!

I contacted my local shelters about “poundseizure” and I am happy to report I’ve gotten numerous emails and phone calls back in less than a day reporting that the shelters in Orange county where I live do not practice this!

  • felicia says:

Alright!!! I am soo…happy It is a big step I as well as Iam sure others are on a mission to stop all animal cruelty.

  • Corey says:

TERRIBLE NEWS! TERRIBLE NEWS! As PETA continues to fight these battles within 1st world countries pharmaceutical companies and drug testing labs are expanding their facilities in CHINA and ASIA away from preying eyes. So what is better 1 Force companies to do animal testing in China and Asia OR 2 Reduce and have better controls of animal labs in the UK US etc? People need to see the big picture. Do you really think that this is victory? It’s just another reason why companies go to Asia for testing animals. In case you didn’t read today’s news… CHARLES RIVER just bought WUXI in China. So Charles River closes an animal lab in the US and expands in China. This is better for animals? People need to realize that sending companies into Asia is not solving any animal cruelty problems. Isn’t it better to keep these companies here in the US and with better controls and safeguards? Unless you can close them in China there is NO victory in sending animals out of everyone’s view.

  • effie comstock says:
