Victory! Lipton Ends Cruel Animal Tests

Written by PETA | January 31, 2011

We are thrilled to announce that after more than 40,000 supporters of PETA and its affiliates around the world sent e-mails urging Unilever to stop testing tea on animals and after representatives from PETA and our affiliates in India and Europe flew to London to meet with Unilever—the world’s largest tea maker, which makes the Lipton and PG Tips brands—the company agreed to halt all such tests. In a message just posted on its website, Unilever states, “Unilever is committing to no animal testing for our tea and tea-based beverages, with immediate effect.”

Thanks to everyone who responded to our online action alert, no more piglets will be infected with E. coli toxin and have their intestines cut apart while they are still alive, no more rats will have holes cut into their intestines and be fed tea ingredients through a tube in their throats, mice won’t be suffocated or have their necks broken, rabbits’ heads won’t be cut off, and other cruel tests that involved tormenting and killing animals simply to study the health effects of tea products and ingredients will no longer take place.

Not one of the experiments that the company conducted was legally required for beverage makers, and regulators have stated that animal tests are not required to prove a health claim about a product.

With this victory, the suffering of animals for Lipton and PG tips teas ends. Lipton joins many other tea and beverage companies—including Stash Tea, Luzianne Tea, Twinings, Honest Tea, Ocean Spray, Welch’s, POM Wonderful, and Japan-based tea giant ITO EN—in being cruelty-free.

What is the ratio. How many bottles of tea do they expect to sell, per unnecessary rabbit death? Maybe we could just skip all the poison in the middle and hand them the useless cash for each bunny. Don’t need their damn tea.

How can we be sure that large companies like Unilever and Proter & Gamble will really put an end to their merciless cruelty against animals in their testing labs. How can they be trusted in any way?? How is it possible that they could have such a large monopoly on products of all kind. Why arent there any other companies who are doing things morally correct and their food supply are not seen on major food market’s shelves? I have personally tried to get food, hair, cosmetic products and everywhere that openly display their support for animal-anti cruelty, like for instance “Like Silk” products. Everywhere I look is Proter & Gamble or Unilever products. Its as if theyre the Mafia or something because they are everywhere. I think most animal anti-cruelty people dont want to support companies that only change their ways because of media and consumer pressure. I would like to support companies that do it right from the start because of moral convictions. There are those, but their products are not on our shelves in South Africa.

I wrote to Lipton numerous times and did not receive a repsonse. I signed the petitions and I gave my Lipton tea bags to Salvation Army. So happy to read this. When we shop, every item scanned is a vote. When we speak, people hear. When we sign a petition, someone reads it. YEAH!!!!!

  • Veggie_Chick221 says:

This is wonderful news. I’ve always loved Lipton beverages and was devastated to hear that they test on animals, more so for the animals’ sake than the fact that I could no longer drink their products. Now that they’ve agreed to stop I can feel comfortable drinking Lipton knowing that no animal had to suffer to make it appear on grocery store shelves. Lipton you have turned over a new leaf and you can be sure that so many more people will love you and buy your products now that animals are not being killed for it. Thank you all!
