Victory! Kids Help Save Foxes

Written by PETA | September 3, 2010

You think “coon on a log” is bad? Allow me to introduce you to the delightful sport of “fox penning,” in which dogs are set loose on a fox or coyote confined to a pen and allowed to tear the animal to shreds.

The good news is that this despicable pastime is now banned in Florida, thanks to the efforts of PETA members and other concerned citizens, including several youngsters who were among 80 people who testified on the issue at a Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting.

FWC Fox kids

“I am an athlete, a swimmer, and a basketball player,” stated one 10-year-old girl. “If fox penning is a sport, I would be ashamed to call myself an athlete.”

Meeting attendee Susan Hargreaves reports that the “[c]ommissioners were captivated by the children’s eloquence and courage as they advocated on behalf of the foxes and coyotes who are chased by packs of dogs with no hope of escape and a certain, bloody death.”

The commissioners voted to permanently prohibit fox penning earlier this week.

I hope this inspires everyone to speak up for animals. If a 10-year-old can do it, so can those of us who are all growed up! You can get started by contacting the wildlife departments in states where fox penning is still legal.

I’ve been involved with PETA for many many years and no matter what I read it seems that the newest campaign is to fight something even more abhorrent than the last. I cannot imagine what sick minds are behind the concept of animal fighting baiting testing chemicals and procedures on animals abusing animals. I don’t even eat them because I’m such an animal lover. I cannot imagine what kind of person it takes to be cruel to one. It just boggles the mind.

It is only sick deviants who would ever think of calling this sporting. Another think these freaks are is BIG TAX CHEATS. They don’t declare any of the income in these penning businesses and the IRS and state should be notified.

u guys r truly inspiring. thank you!!

  • Doug Fanning says:

Spot on toby PETA absolutely shouldn’t back down from the comparison of the holocaust with people and animals both wereare systematically rounded up tortured experimented on etc!.the good news is that the younger generation through informed teachers and other positive sources are doing the right thing.Me and my wife are in the process of moving down to florida and it would really suck ass to get down there and find out they were doing this crap!. what’s even worse is i consider myself pretty well informed about animal issues and I never even heard of this. So PETA keep it up I’m jewish and I’m not offended by the holocaust ad.

Excellent analogy Toby beautifully put… Some mighty quoteworthy phrases in those paragraphs. Huge applause for the girls!

Only just over a century ago hunting humans was ‘sport’ humans are ethically progressing in a two steps forward one step back manner the progression is awesome. So am I comparing some race of formally hunted people to foxes? Yes I am I will compare myself to my notsodistantcousins the foxes anytime we’re mammals we’re family I’m not ashamed… we shouldn’t be ashamed. PETA shouldn’t back down from comparing the WWII Holocaust to the factory farming industry the comparison is fair is only slander in the eyes of those who morally look down upon less conscious animals.

I think that this sport is disguisting and horrible and they should ban it! Imagine you were all alone and then cougars came and tore you to shreds?! Whoever is doing this should be ashamed of their selves! and should be arrested!

  • James says:

There is so much hope to hold onto when the younger generation not only “gets it” but does something about it. What a big step forward for Florida!

I thought the USA had great animal protection laws and it does but needs a lot of improvement. This country I am sorry to say is filled with a bunch of sadists! Thank goodness Florida banned this bloodbath. I just hope it is outlawed in the other 49 states! Disgusting humans!
