Victory: China Eastern Airlines Will No Longer Ship Primates to Labs!

Written by PETA | March 4, 2013

We’re delighted to announce a crucial victory in PETA’s AirCruelty campaign. This morning, China Eastern Airlines informed PETA that as of March 1, 2013, it will no longer ship primates to laboratories to be used in experiments

This ends the export of monkeys from China for use in laboratories! Prior to this exciting development, the majority of primates imported into the United States for experimental use were from China—in 2012, more than 10,000 primates destined for U.S. laboratories came from China. After both China Southern and Air China stopped primate shipments for experiments following pressure from PETA, China Eastern was left as the sole transporter of monkeys from that country to laboratories. Its compassionate new policy means that animal experimenters are left without a single airline to transport primates from China and PETA has now been successful in shutting down this market.

In recent months, PETA had stepped up pressure on China Eastern by encouraging our members and supporters to contact the airline via phone and e-mail. More than 100,000 of you took action. (Thank you!) Local activists with Empty Cages Los Angeles and other groups also helped increase pressure recently by conducting protests at China Eastern offices around the world.

What You Can Do

This is an important advance in keeping primates away from experimenters, but PETA won’t rest until these smart and sensitive animals are safe once and for all—and we hope you’re in it for the long haul, too! Please urge the last three remaining holdouts to follow China Eastern’s example and adopt a formal policy prohibiting the transport of primates destined for laboratories.

China Eastern Airlines … THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for careing for animals I just hope and pray other airlines will follow your lead and do what is right. Xie xie! There is this saying … treat others like you would want to be treated. We humans were not born into this world to be evil (or nice), it is a CHOICE, a CONSCIOUS CHOICE! All humans have a choice to help or to hurt. WE HUMANS ARE DEFINITELY NOT SUPEIOR OR BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE ON THIS PLANET! It’s so blatantly obvious that we’re not superior because of our actions towards other living sentient beings and how we treat them. “The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot.” (Mark Twain)

When we were commanded by the Bible to do good unto the least of us I understood it to mean all his/her creatures were to be dealt with in a humane way. Its why he/she gave us a mind that can reason, I understand pain. I am not a particulary religious man, however i know the most basic precepts of right and wrong. Civil society if it is to be civil,it has to recognize its errors and greedy concepts and attempt to cull out savagery and the love of money. We truly sow the wind and reap the whirlwind if we continue to ignore our gift of humanity..this planet has become too crowded to be ignorant of and compassion for fellow creatures

Why has China-based Hainan Airlines, which earlier announced a ban on shipping of primates to laboratories, now reversed its policy in response to pressure from the desperate, heartless scientists in America. I kindly ask China-based Hainan Airlines that prohibition is maintained as before, do not send a single animal laboratory to Amerika. For long time ago they started with the technology applied to human research that has shown to be successfully and correctly to human !!!

  • Liliana Gavilanes says:

Many congratulations PETA for doing this marvelous activity to take care of animals. Most of them are precious, they take part of God’ creation and they deserve love and care from human beings. Thank you very much for your consideration to animals and please continue with this excellent labour. Try to expand the activities of your institutions to another countries where the maltreatment is really catasthopic and unacceptable.

  • Andre says:

I am very glad that monkeys are no longer carried into air planes anymore. They must be inhabited in wild forests as they have a freedom to live any longer!

What a disgrace we are as a species!

  • From France says:

This means that Air France and Paris-CDG airport will become the main cruelty hub! Now they will fly monkeys from Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou to Paris then to the closest city in the US (cool! Air France has flights to almost every big city!)… I’m so shameful to be French, and to have been a Air France customer… Now is time to move to them! Boycott them! And spread the word: Air France is pure cruelty! If you fly Air France, you have a chance to fly with monkeys destined to laboratories. And I’m worried now, they will just use privet jets to fly them…of course way more expensive, but they will :(

  • clare says:

Well done!!! More of this needs to happen!! There are still too many animals suffering for the benefit of humans and experiments. One hopes for things to change for a positive future for primates worldwide. There should be more protective legalities to protect our fello cousins and to educate humans of the rights of other species.

  • Patrick says:

Thank you so much for your hard work, PETA!

  • Yvonne Fast says:

What kind of people can support this cruelty beyond words? What kind of people take a job at such place? It is beyond may comprehension. Poor animals! It cannot be right that the human race take such advantage of the weaker creatures in the world. Let us never accept this! Thanks PETA for being there!
