Victory! Bullhook Ban Passes

Written by PETA | June 1, 2011

Sweet Georgia Brown! Or should I say, “Sweet Fulton County Board of Commissioners”? Earlier today, following pressure from PETA, concerned members of the community, and celebrities like Demi Moore, the board approved a ban on the use of bullhooks—batons with a sharp metal hook on the end that are used to hit captive elephants in order to keep them fearful and obedient.

Because elephants traveling to Fulton County can’t be jabbed or beaten with these ugly devices, circuses like Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and other traveling shows will have to leave them behind.

If you’re as happy about this as we are, please send a note of appreciation to the Board and commend it for its compassionate decision.

This won’t be happening in Fulton County any more.

I hope some day we as human being wake up with the conscious of knowing that animals are part of us, so we treat them with kindness.

  • Betty says:

I think more people ought to be treated the way they treat animals; we would then see much less cruelty, abuse, and neglect.

  • Carrie Melas says:

Yes, PV, people must understand that humans and animals have more similarities than differences. Maybe this will help us all understand that we must respect the animals and furthermore any form of life. And since we people are considered to be the most intelligent animal on earth and also the keepers of earth, we subsequently bear great responsibility for our actions toward all lliving creatures, especially toward animals of higher intelligence. Thank God, the enlightened people of PETA see to this and put in their strength and energy and time for this. I totally and wholeheartedly support you all(unfortunately only mentally and only in words) people of PETA, and have no words to express my thanks to you for all you have done and keep doing. God bless you all. Thank you.

  • Carrie Melas says:

Being abusive and cruel to creatures considered inferior to human beings (but also unfortunately toward other human beings as well) is the least to say pure barbarism and indicates low and perturbd mentality. Each time a law comes to pass against any form of cruelty is a step of mankind towards deserving our being called human beings and our being considered intellectual and civilised.

i crave the day ALL animals are treated with kindness and respect, not in my lifetime but this is one tiny step towards it, thankyou.

  • Emma says:

I never knew that circus animals was mistreated so bad! I never want to support them again! Animals go through so much and are the ones that are the most neglected. I hope they all go to jail.

  • PV says:

Animals should not be used for entertainment. It’s slavery. They belong in their natural habitat. More people need to be taught that humans and animals have more similarities than differences.

  • Abhishek says:

OMG ! I almost cried after watching this video. Thank you ‘Fulton County Board of Commissioners’ for banning bullhooks. Please go a step further ahead and order closure of all manufacturers of such animal torturing instruments and all circuses. I’ll be even more happy and so will those innocent animals. Please consider my request. Thanks.

  • Julie Ritson says:

I am glad to hear this I think it is terrible to take animals out of there natural habitat just to amuse the humans, why do humans need so much entertainment whats wrong with them unless they are abusing an animal they are not happy. People who abuse animals make me very angry and I would just like to batter them and throw them in jail.

I would like to thank the County Board of Commissioners for showing cmpassion to elephants by banning the use of bullhooks. Hopefully other Counties and authorities will follow suit. I am looking forward to the day when exotic animals are no longer perform in circuses worldwide and can live a life free of suffering.

  • Attila Varga says:

Muchos gracias!!!! I love you all for your decision to stop the bullhooks. And thank you Demi Moore, and PETA (of course). Without you, and all the many animal lovers like myself, this and countless other horrific, ghastly acts like this would continue. But they NOT continuing!!! Every victory begins with us.

  • Leona Fowler says:

Thanks so much for caring about elephants and what you have done to spare them suffering. I care so much for them and I appreciate your actions.

  • Virginia Schmidt says:

More pressure has to be put on the closure of circuses and animal zoos. These poor animals obviously are not happy and this kind of abuse is unforgivable! Thanks to PETA for all their efforts to stop this kind abuse.

  • Leon says:

    Thank you Peta!

  • Steven Bryant says:

This is a small victory, however just like it happened with the lions in Bolivia, live animals in circuses should be banned, but we have to be very careful that the animals from circuses do not end up being hunted.

  • Gianna Macias says:

If a circus uses these torture instruments they should not be allowed to enter the county, just leaving the elephants behind, probably subject to more abuse because they cannot enter the country is a bitter sweet act, since the abuse on these great animals is not really deterred. Please consider banning the use of animals in circuses, since they do not treat them as they should.

  • Elske says:

The elephant is my favorite animal and I’m glad that they banned something painfull. Thank you for taking action and keep on doing the good work. ;) Nature will be grateful for people like you all!

  • Brittney Montana says:

Thank GOODNESS!!!! What a relief Whoooo, so does that mean Ringling Bros & the other circuses can’t use bull hooks at all Anywhere EVER??

  • Punnance says:

Thank you so much, Fulton County Board of Commisioners!

I understand the concept of hitting tigers during training; wrong, but I can understand their thinking. I don’t see the point in hitting the elephants right before they perform. They aren’t training, the animals seemed to be calm and under control… I feel like I’m missing something.

  • nicole says:

Ringling Brothers sucks!!! Hate them. Thank goodness for this, poor elephants

  • Donna says:

After watching videos like this, I often wonder whatever happened to kindness, mercy, and most importantly, compassion. It seems as if the hearts of people are getting colder. God knows these majestic elephants and tigers don’t want to be caged and abused. The day of reckoning is coming for those trainers when those animals decide to fight back!
