Victory: Ad Agency ‘Fires’ Great Apes

The recent attack on a Connecticut woman by a chimpanzee named Travis served as stark reminder that great apes should never be kept as “pets” or used for entertainment. In the wake of this tragedy, we are happy to announce that Young & Rubicam (Y&R) (the fourth largest ad agency in America) has called on all its offices worldwide not to use great apes in any future advertising campaigns.

In a commentary that appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Jane Goodall explains that the widespread portrayal of chimpanzees as cute clowns in ads, TV shows, and movies has misled the public about the dangers they pose. “Only a month ago,” she writes, “Americans watching the Super Bowl may have laughed at an ad in which chimpanzees dressed as mechanics worked on a car. … Is it any wonder viewers might think that chimpanzees would make great pets?”

Y&R joins other progressive companies, including SEGA, Honda, PUMA, Subaru, Keds, Yahoo!, and The Ad Council, that have also pledged not to use great apes in ads.

Icing on the cake? Even the U.S. government is doing its part. On Tuesday, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the Captive Primate Safety Act, which would ban the interstate transport of primates for use as pets. The bill is now going to the Senate, so please urge your senator to support this important legislation.

    In light of these recent attacks i feel it is only plausible that we destroy all these creatures before they can attack again

    I just received a letter from Peta today that contained very graphic pictures of dogs being crammed into cages in Korea so tightly that they could not move! Some of the animals were not even upright. The letter stated that the Korean people tie the dogs up then tear them apart while they are alive. They put live cats into boiling water to use the juice that comes from boiling them. Please boycott all products from Korea until this practice is stopped.

    Thats really great and a step in the right direction no question. I wish the ad council would stop advertising animals as food. I don’t think that should be allowed. It gives the meat industry an unfair advantage over animals and it certainly isn’t helping people either with all that temptation and people are just getting fatter and fatter and sick too. All the money in the world isn’t worth having that on your conscience. You guys have the ability to turn this world around. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

    In light of these recent attacks I feel like we should dispose of all primates in captivity its only a matter of time before they try to attack again

    i am happy about the news but upset that it took this long. it is unfortunate that they are reactive instead of heeding to the warning before this tragedy happen.

    I am very happy to hear this news! On the other hand isn’t it funny that it takes a tragedy before our society makes any attempt to do the right thing?! Now let’s apply this same concept to circuses rodeos horse racing ….and the list goes on. I guess animal rights advocates are not so “crazy” after all!

    The Travis tragedy might finally be the impetus to educate people that chimps and other primates belong in their native homelands or high quality wildlife sanctuaries and zoos.
